May wanna try "Bioplast". The lfs with an engineering name located in Boon Keng Road.
Cheers!
Hi William
You can try along the stretch of light shops at Balestier but you need to ask the shop keepers for the catalog as most do not store MH light sets.
Expect to pay around 165 to 180 per lamp.

The title below my name does not make me a guru...listen at your own risk!...
I think Keong Seong at Havelock Rd carries Weipro MH lamps. The shop at Qian Hu has Arcadia MHs(since they are the distributors).

Hi
I am targetting to but 2 x 150MH for my 4ft aquarium. Can anyone advise on where to look for mh and the estimated cost of the light, bulbs etc...
Thanks!

Can DIY or not? thinking of 75W MH couple with some of my PL for optimum coverage. Since MH cast a solid shadow, will need PL light to cover those dark spots. Also for the reason, need to off the MH when I am home, else Platoon Commander will go Berserk!![]()
can purchase those spot light (those used in factory) for the job?
Baby Steel!
There are those industrial type MH which will also work but the look may put you off. Lighitng shops around Jalan Besar and Kelantan Rd may carry those hanging type. So far these lights are default 5000K tubes which tends to be yellowish. You can change to 6500K from Iwasaki. You can get it from Eye Lighting (checklisting in yellowpages) which cost around $30+.
Qian Hu had a aquarium fair at bugis sometime back- and i saw a set of MH lighting 5" type ocean free- they quoted something like $1200.
so EX
I read from thekrib, that, during the early days of this hobby, people then didn't have Metal Halide lamps for aquariums, so instead, they use Sodium vapor or Mercury Vapor bulbs. The former produces an orange light (like our street lamps) while the latter produces light that is almost white (in the 4000~5000K range I think). Although the light temperature of a Mercury Vapor lamp is not ideal, but the low cost and ease of installation makes these bulbs attractive. I have not checked out the market price, but a friend who purchases these bulbs in his work says it costs < $40 a piece. The amount of light from a 125W bulb is 6,200 lumens, while a single 36W PL produces 2900 lumens (not too efficient, these Hg bulbs). In addition, if you purchase a mercury vapor bulb with a E27 base, it'll easily screw into any of those nice (female approved) pendant lamps at Ikea.
BTW, Sherwin, are the lamps you buy in lamp hardware stores the type with a bare bulb, or the type with wall mountable enclosures?
Are there metal halides lamps with integral ballast available on the market?

Hi guys,
Dropping by this great forum after such a long time since I stopped planting.
Happened to see some of you are looking for Metal Halide Lamp and I came across this acticle from a friendly lfs - Pet Provision.
They are selling this DIY Metal Halide Lamps that use top of the range IWASAKI bulbs which are 100% UV radiation proof. These lamps are rated at 6,500K Daylight and 150Watt each.
You may want to find out more from this lfs web site:

There are also pendant type MH lamps which would look more appealing for home installation. For me I've modified to a pulley system by removing and placing the ballast in a remote position.
Here's an idea of how my lights would look like.

Hi Sherwin!
Did you get your MH from one of those lightin shops along Balestier? It's nice!
Cheers!
Actually from a lighting shop around Jln Besar area.
Hey Thanks!
Juz wanna double confirm that the MH in your pics are the type I will expect to see in those shops! They are pretty good-looking! Sure doesn't put me off! =)
Btw, you devise the pulley system yourself? Where and how to get the parts and info on how to install such a system? The lighting shops? Thanks!
Cheers!
Go to 3T Lighting in Veerasamy Road. Just tell the guy there you want hanging pendant MH light for fish tank, and he will know what you are talking about. They have white ones like Sherwin's at about $180 for 150W.
I also bought mine from them, 2 x 150W. Nice looking.
By the way, I noticed that Sherwin mentioned at his pbase site that his Osram bulbs are 6500K. Actually OSRAM lamps are 6200K, not 6500K.
you mean the whole unit or just the bulbs? this will be my project for next year!
Baby Steel!
Hi Pink!
Do they have waranty for it? Thanks!
Cheers!
the whole unit, white colour, with white chain links to hang on the ceiling, just like what you see in Sherwin's pbase page - all for about $180 for 150W one, bulb and all. For mine, I asked for Osram bulbs. At first I also wanted to DIY, but since I can get these at this price, I decided against DIY.
I can't remember if there is any warranty.
pink, sherwin's MH is modified with a pulley for maintenance purposes
