Is overflow needed in a marine tank?
can we just use the normal pipe from filter to siphon the water all the way out into the sump?

that can also be done but overflow is good coz u can also do a top siphoning.

Just curious... how are you setting up your siphon?

Is your sump tank below the main tank?

Potential Problems:

Flow from the main tank > Flow pumped back to tank, sump overflow and main tank run dry.

Flow from the main tank < Flow pumped back to tank, main tank overflow and sump tank run dry.

You must have the siphon at exactly the same flowrate as the return which is practically almost not possible except by an overflow.

But if you have a way to do so without an overflow, please share... I am curious.
