Just DIYed a fan setup using 2 120mm DC fans
Good thing is most of things i used to piece the setup together i already have lying around the house , except the 2 120mm DC fans , remember having spare at home , but couldnt find them so went to Sim Lim Tower to get 2 at $16 total.

Not bad , its like $16 for my fan setup
Best of all reduces my water temp down by 2 degrees to maintain at a current 28 deg cel.

(*update - my water temps constantly at 26 now even with everything on )

Considering i run 2x36W PL , with hood , 3 internal powerheads in my tank adding to the temp rise , not too shabby

Good job for a 1hr's work haha

    Pics here

actually, for $15, u can get a AC fan for simlim tower and it cools 2 degree down too.. (plug and play too, no DIYing needed)

    anyway, art.. nice job

It's not adviseable to use AC fan... The effect will be disasterous if anything happen like come in contact with water or electrical leaks.

    DC is safer.

The fan doesn't really cool the water as in a fan cool us..

It helps to increase evaporation thus reducing temp... Therefore, if the water dun evaporate, no reduce in temp.

the reason on using a fan is not to cause evaporation, but to replace cooler air between the lights and the water surface (heat radiates to the surface causing it to warm up) the choice of using AC from DC is simply its more powerful, one fan is enuff to cool a 4ft without any probs.. water splashing to the fan will not cause a shortcircuit unless water gets into the connection point, which is very unlikely, unless it's not secure at the first place.. been using AC fan since I started and at only one time did I get a shortcircuit, mainly due to my soldering skills.. all in all, its safe

A fan is to encourage evaporation lah.. evaporation cause water to lose latent heat of evapoartion...

If you wanna cool you light might as well blow at the light...
You will find that you lose water more when you use a fan..

AC is still not recomended... 240V will kills anything... Dun have to be water splashing on to the fan. The fan can drop into the tank...

And AC fan is powerful... so powerful that your finger will be gone when they meet. :P

binbeto, even if the fan drops into the tank, it just trip the circuit breaker and nothing else.. it doesnt kill the fish... if u guys find the fan to powerful and worry if u have children around, they do sell metal grille for the fan, think its $1 ea and it can be place on both sides.. incase yr fishes decides to jump into the blade

I know circuit breaker is suppose to trip.. but do you wanna take the chance?

And be careful even if you have grill... Your hair will be caught even if you have grill.. and it is not a pretty situation.

Try not to buy a too powerful fan as too powerful will cause a lot of surface movement, causing CO2 to be lost.

P.s. A DC fan can work from 7V to 15V. so any adaptor with that range can be used.. (for those wanting to try it out)

Metal grill can be bought at SLT at abt $1-2 each.

when using ac fan, always switch off the fan or any ac equipment before meddling with your tank.
this will prevent you from being electrocuted.

anyway, the elcb will trip if any short occurs.
    but nothing is 100% safe.
