    Re: Outbreak~~

my nano tank got a bad growth... worried that my shrimps will get tangled in them...

as for my 2ft which i am going to be placing my new shrimps, the meshes got hair algae growing upwards... dont know if its because my lights on too long duration or maybe i should start introducing CO2 or what is the problem that causes these...

I take the whole mesh or driftwood out and put it in a yamato only tank. They pick it clean within two days (provided you don't feed your yamatos). After that, I return it back to the tank.

I bought the liquid CO2 stated EIHO Plant Carbo on the bottle. Anyone can help me verify how many caps should i put in daily or once every 2 days?

Light has set a timer for it to be on from 9am-12pm & 5pm-10pm..... (8hours total)

I have another question, I bought this liquid fert which was said to be shrimp safe. Its calle: Miracle Baby - Water Plant Balance-gro Fertilizer
Can anyone tell me if its really shrimp safe?

That's a big problem when lights are turn on from 8am to 11pm. The corrective action is to take out the algae manually in order not to harm your precious shrimps. Unfortunately, there is no silver bullets for your situation.

I will nuke the tank with Hydrogen peroxide if there is no shrimp. All algae will be eradicated

yeah.. i was taught that hydrogen peroxide will handle the algae... will the affect my plants too? but its too late now that my crs are introduced already... the only corrective measures i can do now is to remove manually (which i have done, but i still see some on the meshes).. adding in liquid co2 since i assume lack of co2 in water causes an outbreak... and bought myself a timer (ouch) to set the timing of my lightings to be only on for 8hrs max.... or maybe i can just off the lights for couple of days if this persist...

My only problem is hair algae growing on the moss.
Hydrogen peroxide will basically nuke the moss as well.

yeah.. thats what is happening.. mine is on my fissiden moss as well... which is why i m resorting to using CO2 to somehow generate more co2... have already managed to remove those which i can see... but after adding co2 liquid, seems that the hair algae seems to be lesser or should i say not so vigorously growing... i think also because my livestock is not really alot now, so there is a lack of co2 emission from them...

    Re: Outbreak~~

Dear all, i have encountered this before with US Fissiden mesh bought from a certain someone in the forum. At first i thought it was hair algae, but from prior experience and further checks online, it is confirmed to be CLADOPHORA sp. algae, a.k.a blanket weed. It is the second nastiest algae you can have in your tank. Almost all livestock (in fact, all my livestock; yamato, oto, SAE, Cherry Shrimp, do not eat it) will avoid eating it and is very difficult to remove manually. I had to tear down the whole mesh and remove all strand by strand. Another bro has tried nuking with bleach but could only weaken but not kill it. On top of that the US Fissiden suffered from the nuking.

Thus, what you may have that is growing among the Fissiden may not be hair algae but the dreaded Cladophora algae instead. So Good luck!
Double check if its this algae you are seeing. It is harder and rather brittle compared to hair algae which is slimy and soft.

I think it might be this algae you are talking about.. but well, i have manually removed those that i can see and is putting in liquid CO2 (something close to Flourish Excel) into the tank daily.. hope that it will not harm my shrimps..
read the article, but they said that marimo moss ball has them, surprisingly, i have that in my small tank as well, but this moss seems to be growing out of other plants instead of the moss ball.. and the marimo moss ball only has 3-4 stalks growing out of it, so i doubt it was from the moss ball...

wondering if snails actually eats these... maybe nerite snails which is said to be very effective algae cleaners? but if i put that, might make them meals for my assassin snails or even make them snatch algae with my shrimps...

but thanks bro kiatster for pointing this out.... back to keeping less lighting on, daily CO2 dosage & pray hard it doesnt bloom again like before....

maybe can just take out the affected mesh, black out, nuke with hydrogen peroxide, 2-3 days later wash with distilled water.

I use excel to control te hair algae problem. It stunts the growth of the algae and over 1 to 2 weeks, lessen the algae a lot, though cannot completely eradicate.

Ahh...... I have this deadly algae on my moss.
I think I will have to remove the moss and replace with new one.
When I try to pick them off by hand, some moss came off with it as well.

    Re: Outbreak~~

Hi my tank also having an outbreak of black hair algae mostly on my ferns and nana and fortunately they leave my fissiden back wall alone. what i do was i spray Excel with a syringe directly onto the algae instead of just pouring it in to the water. Some black hair algae now turn brown in just 1 day though. my dosage was 2 time of what it stated but be careful of oxygen depletion if you have livestock in it. today will be my 3rd day of dosing.

    hyun007,

two things i know. As per Stradic said. Excel spot treatment will be good. But I am not sure how confident are you. CRS is very expensive

secondly, moss turn brown, no worries, they will grow from there again. this is how we sell moss to united states. by drying the moss and inserting them into envelop. Moss is stronger than what I thought. Btw, the same cannot be said about Fissiden. I have no prior experience with Fissiden.

    Re: Outbreak~~

can i know if the marimo moss ball is the root of another algae boom? i have already set up a co2 setup partly for my plants as well, but there seems to be having more green dots on my glass now... can it be because i introduce a marimo moss ball which was actually in my IQ3?
