I have a 15 gallon community tank. The PH is at 6.8 with lots of plants.
I have positioned flat stones in a few places.I have one male and female holland ram fish. The female is bigger than the male. The female has a bright pink/red tint on its belly.
The male ram fish seems to ignore the female. The female is always chasing the male.I did notice once that they were rubbing fins against each other at the time the male's black strips intensifies. Most of the time I would see the female swimming after the male and the male swims away from it as if the male is not interested at all in the female.
Any help will do to get them spawning regularly because thats the time the male ram looks very beautiful.
Thank you in advance.

Actually, I had all these fishes before re-scaping my tank. A week before re-scaping, I had newly introduced the female ram to the tank. The Ph was then 6. The moment the male saw the female, it was attached to it like glue. Follow it where ever it swims. As if it was protecting it. 1 or 2 days later, they started cleaning the driftwood and also made a small pit beside the driftwood.
I just wasnt aware that they were actually ready to breed. Didn know much knowledge on rams at that time untill further study on the net, but it was too late. I had already re-scaped the whole tank and added gravel which made the ph rise to 6.8. I didn notice any eggs layed.
Now that I have re-scaped my tank, they are not spawning anymore.
Anyone could tell me the reason why ?
Or should I try Ph down or something.
Thank you in advance.
Hi Altum_lover76
I managed to remove 2 fishes which you had highlighted.
Molly x 1
Angel X1
Others that you had hightlighted (Badis,Honey Guorami,Sparkling Guorami&Platy), I dont think they were a problem to the ram fishes because they are very timid towards the rams.
As of today, female ram still chasing the male ram who is just swimming away.At times hiding from the female as if totally not interested in her.
Is this normal behaviour. Do rams at times spawn and then aggress at other times ?
Today I had replaced the female ram with a younger female.
Coz the older female which was bigger in size, was always chasing and stressing the male who is smaller and younger than her.
Soon as I removed her he looked very relief and started exploring the whole tank again.
Usually just stays at one corner and on the look out for the female ram fish who is always giving him a chase.
Now he is really interested with the new female. Following her all the time and his color has become very intensified. But she, just swims away without giving any attention towards him.
Look like the courtship has started and it may yield good result soon.![]()

My 2 ft tank
Flora: Anubias barteri var Nana, var "Gold" and "mini", Crypto Wendtii, C.parva, Marsilea Hirsuta, Flame Moss, Hygrophila Polysperma, H.Violacea & H.Corymbosa, US Fissiden
Fauna: Guppy, Pelvicachromis Pulcher, Nannacara Anomala, Laetacara Araguaiae 'Buckelkopf'
I re-introduced the old female ram to the tank where 2 ram(male+female) were already housed. The male seems very interested in the old female ram again and is chasing it all the time. Old female ram's side fins looked torn probably due to the jump, out from the small 5 gallon tank I had in before.
