How long should we turn on the lights ? 6 - 7 hrs?


Facing a algae bloom of brown diotioms suddenly. Like all my snails, otos, yamatos are on strike. (Mature tank for 2 years)

using 2 x 24w t5 lights ( 4 actually turned off 2 since the beginning)

Brown Diatoms? These thrive mostly in new tanks where the silicate levels are high, although poor house keeping may cause a recurrence...
Otos love these algaes and should be able to clear it quickly...are you sure its a brown diatom?
Is there a purplish tint to it?

Mine has the same problem initially. Straight 8 hours lighting everday with CO2 injection.

But problem solved since I break up my lightings hours.
7am - 11am follow by 7pm - 11pm.

Plants still doing well.

I break up my light timings 9am to 1pm, 5pm to 9pm
Yes it is brown diotioms as I have this when starting the tank, no purple tint, hard to scrub away too..
I need to use a hard card or scrapper to remove it from the glass, the plants... very hard..
Have 5 yamamotos, 4 otos, 5 nerite snails, 2 Sae. All on strike???

But I do house keep, change water 50% and cotton filter weekly.Dose Macro on every Mon , Fri and Micro on Tues, Thurs, Sun.
