I suggest you use more lights for a 2 ft deep tank. Hairgrass looks better if they dun grow tall, and for that to happen, you will have to ensure there is sufficient light. So my preference will be overkill!

hi guys...need some advise on the amt of light needed for my tank.mine is 2ft height,2ft length.roughly abt 20+ gallons.so i guess need abt 50-60+ watts.currently my light holder can only put 1 tube.was tinking of buying the CR-600 where it can put 2 tubes.so should i put 2 tube of 36W or 2 tubes of 55W?my plants is all hairgrass at the moment.any advise for me?
*and btw,wat watt does the CR-600 comes with?[:]

Its probably due to high demand in nutrients due to the high amount of light in which the guys fail to supply which results in some kind of deficiency symptom aka chao ta look. []

Simple...more light and you would need CO2 plus more frequent dosing of nutrients aka more work.
Less light..you can go without CO2 or with CO2 for better growth...less frequent dosing of nutrients aka less work and more time to view the tank.

Nutrient control is never an optional task in medium to strong lighting tanks with CO2 injection. Since your tank is planted with hair grass, it would have to have at least 2W/Gal (maybe even more since your tank's height is an unusual 2ft).

Less frequent dosing does not mean optional dosing. Eg. I dose 3.5ml of traces 3X a week for my high light tank but only need 3.5ml 1X a week for a low light tank. No CO2 supplementation and its a different ball game. Fish feedings plus little water changes in maybe once in 4-6months should provide all the nutrients the plants need (snail like growth though).

I still prefer to let you draw your own conclusion.
- Your tank is almost covered with hair grass (read that in one of your earlier postings).
- You are intending to use strong lighting (assumed that from the title of this thread).
- You are injecting CO2 (assumed since you are want to use strong lighting).
- Plants grow at a faster rate with strong lighting and injected CO2.
- Nutrients are consumed at a faster rate when plants grow at a faster rate.
- ... Found your answer?
It would be a lot easier (and faster) for me give you 1-2-3 instructions but I would be denying you the satisfaction of figuring out how things work for your tank.

I'm here to "psycho" u to overkill. I also grow hairgrass in my 3 ft tank with 2 ft depth. But I use FLs, a total of 145watts. My hairgrass did not dry up, say for those old dying leaves that must be trimmed away!

I'm assuming your 3ft tank dimensions are 90X60X45 (LXHXW)
Volume = 90 X (60-10) X 45 = 202.5L or 53.5 gallons
145W lighting will only give you 2.71W/g.
Can you help verify.
When you say "overkill"..... how much do you recommend? Usually when people say they have deeper tank like 2ft height, they would to have higher volumes (due to the extra height) and that's why people will have to add more lights. Is that what you meant?

You do not need to overkill on lights. Whatever you wattage you decide (2~3w/g), you'll have to provide proper amount nutrients accordingly.
Juz my opinion.
So sherchoo, with about 2 wpg would it be overkill to balance nutrient at 1ppm PO4 5ppm K and 20ppm No3? wonder if algae will bloom with this nutrient and 2wpg with proper KH and co2.
any comments?

Ermmm..it should be 5-10ppm of NO3 and 20-30ppm of K and not the other way round robin.

With algae in your tank already, supplementing all the necessary nutrients for plants to grow well would help algae to grow as well. Now, you need to focus on the plant growth instead of algae. Remove algae through manual removal during weekly maintenance and algae eaters. Do not cut back on the nutrients even when you see algae growing...just make sure all nutrients are in the recommended range and you should have little issues.
Oops..2wpg is good..not too little not too much. [] Its like driving a car between slow and fast speed..you would not get hurt so badly when you crash.

Guess my lighting isn't really overkilled. But I believe it will be better for BLuezing case should he put in more lights and "overkill" his 2 ft deep system.
I think you were the one who helped me out in the Blyxa Japonica thread where I asked the question of putting in more FLs to accomodate for its lack of penetration in a 2ft deep tank.
But Sherwin, IMO, the watts/gallon(or lumens) rule may not apply that well for a deep tank, bcoz in the end, plants like Blyxa Japonica is still going to grow above the gravel surface right? Please clear my doubts! Thanks!

Power compacts should be able to penerate at least to get enough lights for the plants to grow well. Proper nutrient supplementation is another thing that affects how a plant turns out...its not always the light..![]()
