hi there, parrot fishes are generally known to be hardy and according to my "other-half", she has parrot fishes and hers are doing relatively well in her tank with driftwoods.
currently, my tank has 23 blood parrots with 2 plesco. my tank looks really plain and sometimes it gets boring watching just the fishes. i wanna add some driftwood in to create some background but i heard from a guy at QianHu that it will increase the pH level.
so what i want to ask is, is it safe to add driftwood into my tank? can blood parrots strive in high pH water?

thanks hayabusa! so there's really no difference how many pieces of driftwoods i add in, yah?
hey avant-grade, happy to help! there shouldn't be a problem at all, just be sure to rinse and wash the driftwood thoroughly before adding it in your tank![]()
just plain water from the tap will do? do i have to add any washing chemical or solvent?
yes bro, that will do.. at least for me. but people who are more cautious would soak them in boiling water for 10minutes or so, depends on the individual i guess.![]()
guess i better soak them in water. i heard some people have trouble making their wood sink lol
oh yes hahahaha, we both missed out on that factor. but driftwoods are actually known to be heavier and sink pretty easily, my driftwood sank the moment i placed it in, well depends on the size and mass too i guess! took me one week to get my bogwood down to the bottom though!![]()
oh ya. usually driftwoods are weighted in KGs, so i don't think they should have any problems sinking. i'm getting some wood from a fellow hobbist, but has yet to collect. so i'm unable to determine the weight haha![]()
my 100 gallon tank:
- 23 blood parrots
- 2 high-fin plecostomus
my 10 gallon shrimp tank:
- sakura, cherry, malaya, orange, snowball, tiger, bamboo
- 3 otocinclus, 3 assassin snails
yea shouldn't be a problem, it will sink eventually if it doesn't at first and much faster than bogwood.. so don't worry. hehe, have fun scaping with the woods bro!![]()
haha thanks bro! for the information and advices. after scaping the woods, i'll post a picture to show haha
