is there a possibility that the carbon expired?

what i did was i rinsed it before putting it into my OHF, and when i did, the water slowly became cloudy.

i did a 50% water change but there was a bit of the fishy smell.

this may be bacterial bloom. Try to do more water changes and see what happens. Alternatively, you could just leave the tank for even longer.

water should have cleared out already by now.. next time just rinse it really well before putting in the OHF.

i swapped it to a hanging filter, with the original sponge (together with carbon/charcoal?), bag of the "screwed" activated carbon and my old ceramic tablet-like thing. water seems clearer now. i think it's a bit of trial and error, fish are fine by the way.

it's weird, my water has the greenish tinge now. i think the carbon has expired or something. i used like 1/5 of it in my filter, rinsed and left the leftover to dry. it kind of keep leaving traces of black-ish powder around. is it supposed to be that way?

You could be experiencing an algae bloom from too much phosphate in the water, resulting in the greenish tinge. Adding carbon tends to result in phosphate leaching from the carbon material. Why don't you remove all recently added chemical-related materials (like the carbon) from the tank and see if the water stablises?

i have one question, are those activated carbon pill-like things supposed to dissolve? or it'll still be what i see?
