I prefer more reliable/precise capillary ones like from Sera for temperature sensitive fish.
i am using the normal mercury type...more then enough for my shrimp tank~recently the temperature is getting much hotter then normal temp...take note...
Focus on the topic and keep all chiller talk to a minimum.
There are many themometer types for aquarium use. The one with a red liquid seen clearly in the bulb are red-dyed alcohol thermometers. You do not want to use mercury themometers in an aquarium. Should the silver liquid break out of the thermometer, the liquid mercury will KILL any living thing in the water. Stick with a proven brand of either alcohol or digital themometers for in-tank use.
