I read an articule that if one do not have a quaratine tank, it would be your last defense by bathing the new brought marine fish in fresh water for 2-3 minutes before adding it into the main tank. If the fish show distress, remove immediately and place it in main tank.

    what's your opinion?

IMO, i would not do that, coz fish is already been stressed by the transportation and the last thing it need is to go thru another shock therapy. My advise is to get a container, like a fish trap, place it inside and let it calm down.

If like u had mentioned, if it show distress, take it out immediately and place it in the tank, what is the diff between taking it immediately and putting in the main tank than placing it in pail of fresh water first? u probably subjecting it to more stress.

further reading tells me that new fishes may have certain parasites or some germs stuck on them...... by bathing them for a few minutes of fresh water will actually remove them, thus the chances of infecting the fishes in the main tank is drastically reduced.

having consider what u have said, what about placing the "new" fish in the dark first for awhile(to clam them down), then bath them and place it in the main tank?

    sounds good?

you are correct abt parasites on them. the fishes from the ocean
are immune to them. when the fishes are stress with new environment
the immune system will goes down, and the parasites are able
to pentrate their defence. (mucus coating)

Fresh water bathing will cause the parasites to take in water.
they take in water so much they sort of explode n drop onto
the water. Combine with copper its a effective way of killing
    certain parasites.

This treatment though good will stress the fishes greatly.
Though the parasite are killed, the spots may reduce immediately.
after awhile the tank parasite will attach themselves to the fish
again. (like I mention stress fish get low defence)
so after treatment u may see spots reduce, later in the day,
    the spots may appear again.

The best method is to quarantine the fishes. And monitor the
fish for any drastic change. Feeding them garlic soak food is
a better and safer method. Garlic will boast their immune system.
In the longer run, the fish will be more happy and stronger.

To note: "good" fish is one that makan food. n also note their
swimming behavior. "lousy" fish tend not to swim n hide in one
corner. some even swim ard the surface. these fishes could be
veri stress or caught by "poison" method. If u can afford to wait
n have patience. either as the LFS owner to reserve for u, pick
up 2-3days later, or come back on Monday. (stock usually arrives
    Fri-Sat)

    Conclusion:
Only use the freshwater bath if the fish is badly
conditioned. Full of spots n swimming badly.
Take it out if possible. feed with garlic.
