can someone kindly tell me what the chimney like outlet is for on the HOF? i hope my amano's didn't climb into it. i'm starting to worry as i didn't see them during this morning's feed.

will the surface skimmer still do its work if i put a sponge over it, or will it just clog up the stuff on the surface?
