Bought a CO2 set from NA recently, got loud humming sound coming from the solenoid. Brought it back to chan, he replaced the solenoid. Came back home, still getting the irritating humming noise.

Today, decide to resolve it by myself. Troubleshoot by detaching the solenoid from the valve. No noise from the solenoid when turn on. Repeat sevarl time, no noise when the solenoid is detach. Noise came out when attaching the solenoid to the valve.

So , decided to dismantle the valve. Inside, there is a moving metal rod which act as a opening and closing valve. Attaching the solenoid to the valve and power it up. Metal rod got magnetise and pull down, vibration due to the AC frequency cause the metal rod to hit against the side. Loud audible sound heard. That's the root cause.

What i did was place a piece of small paper between the spring and the rod, this will cause the rod to hit the side with paper rather than hitting metal against metal.

Assemble it up, voila! No noise at all. Dead Silence. After 2 days of irritating loud humming sound, all is well with a 30 min of quick troubleshooting.

The stuff is design to work in that way...any modification to the original might cause side effects which you might not see now. Do you have any check valve along the tubing leading up to a bubble counter? Is the check valve working properly? I did have the problem that time also but once replaced by Chan, it is working fine all the way. The probable cause of the solenoid problem is water flow pass the check valve back to the solenoid when the system is off.

I really doubt it will have adverse effect on it. If you study the design hard enough, it is too simple to cause any problem.

If you detach the valve + Solenoid and still getting the same problem, it has nothing to do with any backflow.

Paper may not last on/off movement for long if there is any abrasion.

    Try some other material?

Usually, the humming noise is there as a result of some dirt particles/sand (dun ask me how it got in hor) that has accidentlly gotten in. So giving that part a hard blow will solve the problem. Dun have to put anything inside.

Mine had the same irritating sound initially. Called Chan and as he advised, run it for 2 weeks and it should be gone. True enuff, no more hum sound after 2 weeks.

Hmm, Chan gave me the same advice.

I really have doubt on that as the metal rod is freely movable in there.
I don't see how running for 2 weeks will help as this is a mechanical problem. The only way i ry lowering the sound is only when the rod is more rigid in there rather than freely movable/

I will give it a try.

I gave Chan the benefit of doubt since I was a newbie then (or rather give myself). Till now, the solenoid has not hummed. It has been 8 mths or so.

Mine used to be quiet... then started humming out of the blue one day and lasted for months. Usually I can get it to stop or soften by wriggling the solenoid a bit. Then one day, I realised that I haven't heard it hum for a long time already.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

I have the same issue before, wriggle the solenoid a bit it will lower the hum. However, if the hum come, it is quite noisy and irritating.

After inserting the thin paper, it is running silence, will monitor for a while. The vibration at the solenoid and valve is also gone.
