    Hi guys,

Would like to get feedback on how you guys deal with mozzies in your tanks when you only keep shrimp in them? I have a 3ft tank dedicated to shrimp but I keep finding mosquitoe larvae in the tank and so far have been diligently taking them out and leaving them to die out of water.

Do any of you have any advice? I currently have a rainbar blowing across the top of the tank but it's water movement doesn't seem to stop the mozzies from laying their eggs.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

same bro, used to have a shrimp-only tank without filtration and mozzies just love to lay their eggs in it. so everytime i see their larvae, i'll grab them out one by one, quite tedious. but after i introduced a rainbar filter and airbar, i haven't seen those pesky larvae anymore. right now my tank is being infested by planarias.. sick

    - 2 high-fin plecostomus
    my 10 gallon shrimp tank:

    - 3 otocinclus, 3 assassin snails

Currently, you might want to get a couple of boraras to deal with the larvae. They aren't exactly shrimplet friendly though unless there is alot of hideouts. In the future, get a tool to ensure the surface of the water isn't that still.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Dealing with mosquitoes in a shrimp-only tank.

I was kind of hoping for more of a hardware solution. So far it's been impossible to find a piece of acrylic 3ft by 1.5. So a cover for the entire tank isn't an option. But since the tank is in my bedroom, allowing the mozzies to thrive means that I don't get a good nights sleep. Are there any kind of small fish that would eat mozzies but not harass shrimp? Maybe a breed of tetra or something?

There still no known non shrimp eating fish around as shrimps are normally bottom of the food chain. You might want to try some mosquito rasbour to help solve the problem.

Or you might want to get a wave maker to disturb the water

It never occurred to me to try Bras Basah. *sigh* I have much to learn in the ways of the force.

Thanks. I'll check it out and see. Maybe that finally might be my solution!

better not using a full piece of acrylic to cover the top of your tank. there may be air exchange problems. the best way now is to fish out those mosquito larvae in your tank now, then moves your rain bar above the surface to agitate the surface. job done.

Hrmm good point Eviltrain. Ok will try that. But given the size of the tank, I don't think the rain-bar can agitate the water surface for the entire tank.

No problem one. Because the eggs needs to be on still water until they actually hatch. The eggs will suck down with the water which came out of the rainbar.

if you're solely looking for a hardware solution, you can try a surface skimmer. i saw a couple of nice ones at NA today. you can give those a try dual function, skim for oil and prevent mossies' eggs

i'm using a rain bar to keep the surface from being still, so currently i have no problems.

i have a rainbar, an internal filter and a bubbletube to stir the water. i rotate the two filters to prevent overheating. no more mozzie problem too.

isn't it troublesome to have to rotate 2 filters?

nah, both are already plugged in and in the tank. all i have to do is switch on one switch and switch off the other.
