Might want to stress that the first day discount is, at the moment, not confirm yet. It came up in a conversation you had, and is by no means a promised on the part of Colourful's boss.

Its about having a good variety of exotic flora and fauna.
I.e. Apisto, wild betta and once in a while some surprises for the hobbyists.

East is definitely lacking in it rather its seriously lacking.
Can some merchants comment on this. Why is it that east is such an unattractive place?

i am sure many out there especially easterner would like to know

Colourful new location is only 1.5Km driving distance from C328 and Green Chapter (C354)... how far could that be? maybe there is a direct bus there... as you only need to drive down south on Clementi Ave 2 and turn left on Clementi West St 21 and you can see the market (Colourful new location) right on your right, and left is West Coast Plaza...

I really welcome the move now I can shop Colourful/C328/C354 all within 1.5KM

yeah I thought of that too.... invest in a small and old building, maybe around 30+ units... and collaborate with all the popular aquarium and pet shops, it will be the pet version of the simlim square!!! I guess you need a capital fund of 50million to start and operate... problem is .... SG market is way too small to get any healthy return from such investment... the other cheaper way is to buy a plot of land in old choa chu kang area or lim chu kang... and again need a great collaboration with all the pet shops....

and ulitimate even if you have the funds... dont think all those pet shops would all agree with you about all moving into one place... they might fear fierce competition and low profit margin... they are mostly small mum and pa businesses and they don't really do any regional or trading...

and eventually... will the tiny SG market will be able to fuel it? I don't know if it is just me but Aquaticquotient has slowed down a lot....

Re: Colourful Aquarium is shifting to Clementi

I don't think it's you. Just like all hobby's, fish/shrimp keeping probably goes through cycles of popularity and decline. Like dog and cat became a craze after every movie with a big dog role like 102 dalmatians or those Cat & Dog movies. I bet Marine aquariums became a craze after Finding Nemo. Eventually those who join in the heat of the craze, might give up the hobby as the enthusiasm dies off. Others become long term joiners. It's a matter of time before something triggers interest in the hobby again. In the mean time, those of us who stay become the old sages. ;-p

I don't think any of the uncles or aunty's would want to consolidate their shop into a central location. I would agree the potential for price wars would be too high, not to mention some of them might have setup their shops intentionally in those locations to be close to home. No one likes an hour long commute.

It was reported in newspaper at the beginning of this year that those fish farms like Seaview in Seletar West will move to a plot of land at Sembawang Road, near to Lorong Chencharu , in-front of Sembawang Golf and Country Club. I can't find that report now, but can anyone confirm this news?

if that happens, all the business will go to the more popular shops, eventually the not-so-famous shops will die out. market price will drop very low which is good for us but bad for them haha

Re: Colourful Aquarium is shifting to Clementi

    Just found it,

    From SLA site

SLA launches four sites for aquarium fish export centre use at Lorong Chencharu

1 April 2010, Singapore - The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has launched today an invitation to tender for four sites at Lorong Chencharu for aquarium fish export centre use. The four sites have a total land area of 17,189 square metres, equivalent to slightly more than two football fields.
2 Each site is offered on a 10-year lease, with an option to renew for a further 10 years, subject to evaluation and terms. Please refer to Annex A for details of the sites. The tender will close on 29 April 2010.
3 These 4 sites form part of a larger State land which has been earmarked for aquarium fish export centre use or other agricultural uses.
4 Information of the sale can be found on SLA’s website at www.sla.gov.sg/land_sales/lorongchencharu.htm and in the Tender’s packets which can be purchased at $52.50 (inclusive of Goods and Services Tax) from the Singapore Land Authority at 55 Newton Road #12-01 Revenue House Singapore 307987 (Mon – Fri, 8.30am – 5.30pm, and Sat from 8.30am – 12.30pm).

    Straits Time report:

    • Ornamental fish farms in Singapore may get tenancy reprieve May 9 2010

Fish exporters in Jalan Kayu worried about their leases expiring at the year end may well get a reprieve. The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) told The Straits Times that it is working closely with relevant agencies to extend the tenancies. The 17 affected exporters account for about 80 per cent of Singapore's ornamental fish export industry, which, as a world leader, is worth around $100 million a year. The land these exporters now occupy is being taken back by the Government for redevelopment. The exporters are worried they may have to wind up their businesses if they cannot be relocated elsewhere by Dec 31, when their leases expire.

The SLA has released four plots of land for tender as alternative sites for the fish farms, but the land area is not enough to take in all the affected farms. Already, 14 of the 17 Jalan Kayu farms have submitted 19 bids for these four plots, with some farms submitting more than one bid; the remaining three affected farms are thinking of shutting down. The SLA has designated another 10 sites in Yishun for the fish exporters, but these will go up for tender only at the end of the month. Those in the business are worried on two counts: One is that the entry of new bidders will narrow their chances of securing a site. The other worry - a bigger one - is the lack of time in which to get their new farms up and running by the year end.

For now, it is still not known when the tenders will be awarded. The new plots are little more than empty tracts of land now and it will take at least a year to put in the necessary infrastructure such as fish tanks and warehouses, said Mr Fong Ching Loon, 72, who owns Pisces Tropica in Seletar West Farmway 1.
He welcomes the assurance from the SLA, which has said: 'To ensure a smooth transition between Jalan Kayu and the new site, SLA will work closely with the relevant agencies to extend the tenancies in Jalan Kayu.'

Mr Fong, who also chairs the Singapore Aquarium Fish Exporters' Association, said the association's 44 members hope something can be done - and soon.
'If not, we will be forced to stop business for a while, and we will lose customers,' said the exporter, who is nonetheless hedging his chances by submitting bids for two of the four new plots.

The uncertainty has irked some exporters, who have made Singapore the ornamental fish capital of the world.
Ms Pauline Teo, 46, the third-generation owner of the oldest fish-exporting company here, Teo Way Yong & Sons, said her company has moved four times since the 1920s: 'Each time we move, it costs money. We're always worried we'll be told to move.'
She and Mr Fong noted that the business is given more support overseas.
Mr Fong said he learnt from an ornamental fish convention in China that a tech park there has been kitted up with a communal filter system that cleans water and pipes oxygen to the tanks.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), which regulates fish exporters here, said it will continue working with them to see what more can be done for the industry.
Dr Ling Kai Huat, its senior ornamental fish specialist, said the tech park Mr Fong mentioned was a commercially driven venture, and that if the exporters here are keen on the system, they can band together to propose and develop it.
'AVA will certainly do its best to support and facilitate such a venture if it is demanded by the local industry.'

Looks like you've found the News article. It's confirmed Seaview is moving to Lor Chencharu (foot access can be via Bottletree.com site, just south of Khatib MRT). The move is only scheduled for 2012 at the earliest. Confirmed it from Seaview just 3 days ago.

Actually, NEX Shopping Centre (right on top of Serangoon MRT (NE+Circle Lines) will be a 'pet hub'. Not sure if there will be many Fish Shops though. Wrt to price wars if there are more shops, think it wont happen. Ultimately, the players know how to regulate; just look at Queensway for Sports shops - don't see any price wars going on; but prices are 'controlled'; but I digress.

Certainly good to have more shops located in the same vicinity for ease of procurement, or even just 'catching up' on the latest.. Per the thread topic; I'm disappointed Colourful is shifting. Think they will be alone at the Block/vicinity. ;-( Have always envied his plants, and I get my fauna from him.

For those want to save transport fee from C328 to West Coast plaza which is near Colourful, take the free shuttle service the bus stop at the mrt on the C328 side!, timing can be found on the notice board there.
