Hi all! Anyone could share if rainwater or RO water is better for breeding dwarfs? Been trying to lookout for an affordable RO system but have not found any yet. They're really ex!! So far, I've been using aged and aerated water stored in an empty tank. So far so good but, lookin' for a better alternative.
    Suggestions people? []

i dont know if it is safe to use rainwater in singapore at all. It may not be that soft anymore after falling thru all the stuff in our sky, let alone clean.

I do not know how relevant is it for dwarfs.esp those wild ones or direct offsprings of them, But many ppl myself included had bred fish using water parameters which can be quite far from what is "natural" for them.

For many it is not abt replicating the natural conditions as suggested by all the literature, it is abt accliminating the fish smoothly to what you can provide for them while avoiding opposite extreme

    And yeah, RO is luxurious

Yeah. I agree with you on this point. I know some guys actually buy bottles of distilled water and mix it with tap water, just to get the right water for them dwarfs! I was thinking of trying something a bit crazy. Take a styrofoam box, lay it with plenty of 'TUKAPANG' dried leaves, let the water age and get dark. Then, introduce a pair of ripe Apistos into it. WAHLAH!! There you have it, blackwater enviroment! Exact replica of the dwarfs' hometown. You think it'll work?

I had never bred apistos before haha.... The only one i had was the cuckatoo thats all.

But hey your idea is not crazy, very often, leaving the fish alone is the best way to breed them...... sometimes over-caring kills.

I read an article some time ago abt breeding a species of apisto. Yeah the guy was advocating what you had said, except that he didnt use styrofoam box but a fish tank. The apistos just bred in between the leaves at the bottom.
One male to several females..throw in some driftwood also .
Of coz if from aesthetic view is it ugly...but somehow thats what i will attempt first if i want to breed them too. Coz actually clean and nice looking tanks only benefit us...our viewing pleasure...the fish cannot care less as long as water quality is acceptable

i wonder if distilled water is too pure for fishkeeping purpose. think it is overkill too. somehow many a times, the fish we keep are much tougher and adaptable than we think they are Esp for more expensive fish.

Look forward to see many apisto frys from you!
