I think at your level it's considered overcrowding as it's difficult to maintain the water parameters constantly using a 1ft tank.

I kept 20pcs in 1ft tank previously and most died.

Have you measured the water parameters?

my shrimps are all fine so far, only lost 3 during a time i edited the tank and made a huge mistake. -.-
forget to put the outflow of the chiller above the water lvl den no oxygen in water den all the shrimps keep hugging the surface.

temp wise it is 25C +1 at most and ph is in the 6 region.

If you want them to breed well, then 40 is way too many.

Re: at what lvl is it considered overcrowding?

if just for survival? i currently have about 80 of CRS/BDS in my 1ft tank. and none died. i dont have a chiller, temp is 25-26.5. i have never measured GH/KH/pH.

will putting selected shrimps in smaller breeding tanks (stick on higher water levels) help breeding?

Try to get a bigger tank,at least 2 ft for breeding.Reason water parameter is more stable.

    Yes, overcrowding does affect breeding.
Even if they get berried, they are likely to loose their eggs.

It is a natural birth control.
The shrimps are able to sense this and they avoid getting berried when they feel overcrowded or water parameter issue.

Unless you can keep the water parameter at optimal level all the time, then it is a different story.

Depends on the breed I suppose, my wild type shrimp easily numbers 200+ in my 1.5ft tank, on occasion it doubles! CRS are rumoured to be quite iffy though.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he will drink beer while getting sunburnt.

was thinking is my tank overcrowded also? mine is a 2 ft tank wif about 70 shrims inside.. Have berried shrimps but the survival rate of the shrimplets is only about 10 to 20 percent? Can anyone advise could it be due to overcrowding issues also?

The answer is YES AND NO.
Depending on how many gallons of water and whether you are able to keep the water level at optimal level everyday.

A standard 2 feet is 2 x 1 x 1.5. which consist of more than 80 litres of water when filled.

if possible, you can add a non-working and non-leaking external canister in line after the existing external canister to " over filtration " the tank. this way will gives you more media area and additional water for your tank.

it is all about getting the right control and balance. my 1ft tank was having like over 100 crs when i was clearing it, was surprised at that count, didnt expect them to grow so much.

I bet it is a mix with youngster. If they are all adult, I do not think they will breed, death occurrence will be often too.

If crs breeds well in a matured tank, the rate goes exponentially.

Bro mature tank how long will it take for the tank to be mature bro? Beside i read that the soil will deplete of their use if we overhaul the tank soil does it mean that it will be no longer consider a mature tank?
