    Hi guys,

It's been 3 months since I started my first tank and things seem alright. Current status:

    Dimensions: 60 x 29 x 31cm
    Light: 15W Fluorescent
Filtration: Overhead Filter run by Dyna motor (no idea of it's filtration capacity)
CO2: None, only Excel every other day
    Substrate: Inert Black Gravel
Flora: Anubias sp. and Java moss
Fauna: 1 Guppy, 2 Otos, 1 Albino emerald cory, 3 Sterbai Cory, 5 Cardinal Tetra

I'm thinking of adding more fish, and the suggestions I got were these:
    1) Add more Guppies (All male/ 2:1 female-male ratio)
    2) Add more tetras (cardinals or a mix)
    3) Add bigger 'main' fish

What do you guys recommend? All suggestions are welcome..Thanks!

    AVOID pufferfish
Moved on from plants to predatory fishes, but still finding for inspiration for a 3ft planted tank.

Fish load is sufficient for now. water change once every month is ok no problem.

Haha Thanks for the advice.. Why is there a bad rep against pufferfish?

I'm currently doing water change about once or twice a week. The tank looks a bit empty, and thus I was wondering if I could add more fish.

Less is better in the long run. You don't get burn out easily.. Take it slowly But I do understand your urge. buy buy buy..

pufferfish will nip the tails of fishes especially those with longer tail

Tetras with guppies are a big no-no, especially with certain nippy and highly active species.

You can add a few more guppies to make a small group, but any fry may be devoured by the parents or the cardinals, whichever gets them first. A pair of male guppies will spend a lot of time chasing each other. Any females will be harassed nearly constantly for mating purposes by the males but that makes the tank lively.
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
    Back to Killies... slowly.

Hmmm, you can consider some pencilfish. They are peaceful and large enough not to get picked on. Brown and Golden pencilfish are often available at most LFS.

I think I'll TRY not to add more for now. I did consider adding in another 5 rummynose.

Current situation seems to be quite peaceful, guppy seems huge compared to the cardinals. So better to increase the number of guppies than tetras? 2 additional females better than 2 additional males?

Put it this way, lesser fish means lesser work which translate to enjoying the hobby more than a person that load his/her tank with alot of fishes and alot of work

I second to what barmby said. You can check whether your tank is overstocked or not by checking nitrate. Also make sure your BB is enough to control the ammonia in the tank. Personally I would add few more cardinal tetras to get better schooling. Just my 2 cents.

Alternatively, you keep one type of schooling tetra, for example Cardinal, Green Neon, or rasbora just to get the effect

You can considering adding more flora in your tank instead of adding more livestocks. This will help to beautify the tank and also keep you occupied so you dont have time to think of buying more fishes. LOL! A picture of your current setup will be good. I personally prefer lesser bioload because with high bioload many problems will arise including algae issues..

Re: What type of fish should I add?

I agree with what barmby said. Your tank livestock seems sufficient for now based on the tank size. However, if you want to add more later maybe another 5 tetras to make it a proper school and that should be the max. Don't get another bigger type so called "main" fish because your tank may not be big enough for them to swim.
I have tried so many tetras-size fishes in the past but in the end, still cardinal the best for me.

Add more plants. That will look nicer.

Current Nitrate is at 15ppm. A few more cardinals will help to complete the schooling effect.

Hi, I'm using inert gravel, with no CO2 injection, so plant choices are limited. Any suggestions? haha I'll try to upload a photo of my tank when I can get a decent one. I experienced terrible algae problems when I kept goldfish, but I don't really see much now..I might be pushing my luck..

Alright, I'll avoid bigger fish. I heard good stuff about cardinals so I started off with them..

Re: What type of fish should I add?

Hi Green Tetra is also a good schooling fish and i feel that it will be more appropriate for smaller aquariums as they do not grow that big and the blue bar on their body is exceptionally mesmerizing! But i do agree with Emokidz that a school of brown/three lined pencilfish will add a zen touch to your aquarium; especially if it is densely planted!
    Cheers!

The guppy's tail got half bitten off by the tetra's..He's now in a smaller, separate tank. I tried uploading the photos but they don't work.

As for mine they don't really fight... The tetras will also stay in a group while the guppies is everywhere
The only problem is there is alot of waste... Thanks to aq brothers for telling me that it is overcrowded it's fine now
