Im currently using crushed coral sand as a substrate for my rainbow crab's tank. Am thinking of changing to peat moss or coconut husk instead as I've noticed that it couldnt burrow in the crushed coral sand. Is it a good alternative as I think sand will not be easy for me to clean up.
Peat moss is not advisable, it is very acidic (pH4-5) and will leach tannins into your tank water, which will make your water very acidic too, and it will not be good for your crab. Crabs need calcium to maintain their exoskeleton, such acidity will sort of corrode the shell and they will have problems moulting.
Oh alright then.. Thanks lucasjiang for the reply. Guess I'll stick with the crushed coral.
