What species do you guys use to test whether your tank is ready for a delicate and costly species like CRS for minimal losses? I hear a lot of people mention commando shrimp before adding their expensive species what is the scientific name for this species?

haha, it all depends on your budget. like for me before i commence on bringing in the whole platoon of CRS into my newly setup shrimp tank, i added 2 SS grade BDS to see if the molt properly and happy with the water or not.

example, if you wants to rear high grade CRS, you put lower grade or equal grade CRS in as commandos.

I use grade 10 pcs C Crs 1 week later 10 pcs A grade 1 week later 10 pcs mix grade from S-SSS since it is going to be a CRS tank only they will know whether water right for them. If common tank i use sakura or cherry to test water

Start with cherry if you are new or low grade CRS

I get you now so commandos are essentially kamikazee shrimp if they die your no good if they live your good. I take it you remove the lower grade stock to stop them cross breeding with your higher grade right? I want to breed S grade I am thinking medium initial investment and slowly their breeding and sale of their young will help pay for themselves. So if I get some B grades and put them in for three weeks whilst I am sorting out my scape to test the water then sell them on and purchase the S grade I should be safer then straight to S or testing with amano's or cherries (in my experience cherries are very difficult to kill they lived at 3Centigrade for 3 months and bred in the sludge of my pond.

Correcto but if B grade why not put in A at least it have the chance to breed S and they are the nearest to sensitivity to the S grade and above.

no, too much money lah. I will remove the shrimp and sell them on or take them back to the store for credit. I get what you mean by sensitivity but still nervous on getting say 5 A grades. I don't have the money to burn and don't want to dilute my gene pool if I get a premium higher grade stocking. I understand that mixing up the gene pool a bit helps to keep the shrimp of a higher quality being overly sensitive but I don't want to have undesirable characteristics trail through.

    Re: A cheap tester shrimp

i just checked all the parameters that i know is essential and if everything ok, just put in the type of CRS i want straight away but of cause at low quantity like maybe 5 to 8 pieces. so far touch wood for the past few tanks, everything just worked out fine. be confident man...

This is going to be a walstad method tank which is my first time doing it on a nano tank (previously I have used 80+ gallon tanks) so I am nervous to burn 70 dollars because my tank is not perfect because the measurements won't be as reliable as it is a more natural system it is harder to calculate.
