Take a look at the pair I got from Zulkifli. Thanks a lot for the pair. It's a double red caca. These are the pictures 2 days after I got them. They have the entire 3ft planted tank to themselves. I'm thinking if i should grab another female. Male seems to bully the female at times, impatient perhaps.

Hope they breed soon, babes will have the entire tank to grow up in.

How did you tell? Was it the black vectral fins? Got this info from the write up by Benetay. By the way, fantastic work on that write up. So far, it's the best information I got on apistos even after going to those 'well known' websites.

No wonder the male seems impatient.

I think she is ready. Just give them some time, and see whether you can see the tail wagging.

BTW, nice photos. Didn't realise they look even nicer in photos!

Tail wagging? Or is it tail whacking? If so, then very soon liao. Wow, my tank seems to be quite lucky, fishes always settle in so fast and start breeding. *heehee*

whacking is from the male, the female will show a submission pose, turning to her side

They have finally bred!! Woohoo!! Actually, the female is laying eggs as of now, wanna take pics but they're quite well hidden. Might be able to squeeze a shot.

However, the cave chosen being so small, i seriously do wonder how in the world the male gonna do his job.... He can't even squeeze in.

Ok, I have updated the link, I do believe you can access it now.

Just to update the rest who might be following the caca's tryst. The male is kind of hopeless sometimes hanging out near the nest site but doing absolutely NOTHING. The female still stays in that little hole you see in the picture if you click on the link. They bred on Sunday, so I'm expecting this sunday to see a little school hanging about. Hopefully the male will do better in defending the fry. I cannot see the fry at all, but I'm just hoping that the female staying at the site means there is something about.

You can only see the fry when they are free swimming....but the eggs look kinda white to me. Hope they are some fertile eggs.

errrr.... thats what all the male apistogramma does.. the male will always protect the perimeter while the mother will be with the fry. So if you see your male with the fry then (1)you have a hopeless female and the male have to stand in or (2) the male is eating up the fry

in cases where the number of fry is too few, the pair will eat the frys and try again

Well, I did something really bad, i took out the driftwood to take a peek while the female and male went off. Bad thing to do on my part, I admit. Could see some wrigglers inside there but the view wasn't clear. Since the female still guards the site to judiciously, I guess there must be something.

As for the male, when I say nothing, I mean absolutely NOTHING. Don't see him guard the perimater either. I guess by this saturday or sunday, i'll know if this brood is successful.

Things are still normal despite the disturbance. Phew...

Is your 3ft devoid of other fishes? if no other fishes or very little fishes, he has nothing to guard against.

Good to hear that there are some wrigglers, but like Simon said, if there are too few frys, the parents will eat them up and try again. Happens to me. They prefer not too waste their energy looking after too few a fry.

Sigh, it's been 9 days since the eggs were laid. The female still hangs around the burrow but there is not a single sight of the fries. No idea, worse come to worse, I may take out the driftwood tomorrow and let them start all over again.

    Hi

if you are really serious about the fries , remove the fries the moment you see them free swimming, thats about 3-5 days from the wriggling stage, can't catch them? simple just use a small hose and siphon them out, raise them yurself by feeding them live BBS.
the survivial rate will be better..

Don't be disheartened, if this round can't make it wait for next time.
I believe you should expect the second spwan soon. My tri pair spwan every 3 weeks when they are in the mood.
