Just curious if anyone else has noticed a odd behaviour in their CRS?

I've noticed that a few (maybe 1-2% of the entire population) will try and climb into the outflow pipe of my filter system. Obviously because of the current, they will never be able to get in. and they lose interest the moment the current stops.

My GF has fondly referred to this as the 'Trial of Manhood' as there doesn't seem to be a correlation between this behaviour and bad water parameters or deaths.

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this behaviour?

i think they like the current... i have a few tanks.... and whenever i am washing the filter inlet... or outlet they will try to do it.... i think maybe the reason is there are algae or plants which are food to them on the inlet/outlet pipes which they are trying to get at. also they like current... which i notice they like to crowd around on the air pump... etc.

If it were algae I could understand, but their attraction to the current continues regardless if the outlet is in the water or not.

anyway I just thought it was a cute name for the effect and wanted to bring it up here. :-)

If too many hang on top look like trying to get out of your tank than GH is too high. That was what i read i have seen it happen with new introduce shrimp and when my tank is rather new. During that time 1 pack of 10 only 1 or 2 will do that. Now i don't see them doing this commando stun accept some shrimplet they will try to climb the wall cause my rainbar is facing inward.

By nature, fishes and shrimps always swim up stream for more food / fresh water / mating ground. hope this will help you out.

I agree with that theory.. i think its their natural instinct to try to travel upstream. I have experienced the same thing before, my crs kept on climbing over the filter mat i use as a wall when i put my filter outlet on top of the filter mat
