Hi there,
You might want to grow mosses (tied to wire mesh, driftwood etc), java ferns and Anubias
Do a google search on low tech plants and you should be able to find more information.
Cheers!

Soil or not really depends on what type of plants you intend to grow. Stem plants will do well with soil as that is where the nutrients are coming from. Plants the can be attached to wood or rocks like ferns, moss or nana can do without soil. Maybe share with us what plants do you intend to grow.
As for the thickness of the sand 1 inch will do. Too thick and you may have issue with the sand later on.

hi, I'm Back...
Currently i have got a 2nd hand Chiller, CO2 and 30kg of Black quartz Sand ...Planning to start planted tank.
I heard one of my fren taught me Putting JBL fertiliser (20mm thick) and cover with the sand...May know is that going to work?
I planning to go for mixture of plant which will include stem plant as well....
Can anyone enlighten me? thanks alot.
I used black quartz without putting any soil fertiliser on my last planted tank before switching to Amazonia II now. I can say that although the plant can still grow but the speed will be slower. I never use any CO2 but I use Seachem Excel and apply micro and macro fertiliser to the tank. You can also try putting First Layer Pure Laterite between the black quartz.

My 2 ft tank
Flora: Anubias barteri var Nana, var "Gold" and "mini", Crypto Wendtii, C.parva, Marsilea Hirsuta, Flame Moss, Hygrophila Polysperma, H.Violacea & H.Corymbosa, US Fissiden
Fauna: Guppy, Pelvicachromis Pulcher, Nannacara Anomala, Laetacara Araguaiae 'Buckelkopf'
But I tried black quartz n plants but it dun seem working n plants dead after couple of months....
I just setup my 2ft tank by putting JBL Fertiliser as 1st Layer (abt 20mm thick) then cover with black quartz sand abt 20mm too...but notice 1 or 2 stem plant leaves become transparent..
