Yes, not always but most of the time..

You have juvenile D. filamentosus so when they mature and the males develop their full color and finnage you are going to really like them.
They are a South American Dwarf Cichlid but quite different in behavior from Apistogramma which like to hug the bottom. D. filamentosus extensively use the lower 1/3 of the water colum and nearly always spawn on a leaf like a Hygrophila or Ludwigia type instead of secretively in a cave.
I am just setting up my 125 US gallon tank as a low tech planted community tank and intend to stock a dozen D. filamentosus. I have been keeping and breeding fish nearly 50 years and these remain one of my perennial long time favorites for 4 decades. I have never had much success getting fry but I have spawned them dozens of times. Here are some photos of the last adults I had taken immediately before then after a spawn so you can see them in their breeding colors. They were set up in a black water style spawning tank hence the tea colored water.

Its been 2 months since i keep 8 of the dicrossus filamentosus.. now, i can start seeing some obvious males and females but it seems like males are the majority..

Updates!!

Its been 3 month since i kept them and they are already adults.. finally able to identify them to be 5males and 3 females.. will be selling 2 pairs away and keep only just 3 males and 1 female...

You should keep at least one male and two females. Females are so rare you really should keep them all and two males.
If you want to breed them you will find some pairs work together better than others but they are inherently harem spawners with the male controlling a larger territory and a couple females use portions of the male's territory.
