Noticed my 2nd generations of Fire Red are somewhat dissappointing - unlike their parents. This is the FIRE-RED only tank. No other shrimps. Pictures speaks a thosand words.

You have Sakura male in your first generation.
You need to get color of male as close to the Fire Red as possible.

How old is your second generation?
Sometime it takes a female till second brood of eggs to show very good coat and color.

It is not just the 2nd generations but 3rd, fourth, fith.....generations. I started with 15 carefully chosen dark fire reds bought from Y618 a year ago and now my 1.5ft tank has about hundreds of them

Is low GH, I used soil and lots of plants and I thought that is what kept most shrimps (other than sulawasi) alive.

I have the feeling that you are letting them breed on their own without culling the poor quality one?

For selective breeding, you choose only the best shrimp to breed.
Only breed the best grade shrimps in pairs.

Continue this procedure till there is less receding gene.

For culling, they can be sold off as low grade fire red, high grade sakura, given away or food for bigger fish.
I am sure people here will buy them at cheap price. (not a big deal as they reproduce every month if your water parameter is perfect)

Maybe it's the food that you feed? Farm bred ones also add a lot of colour enhancement to their food.

bro, may i know where u buy them? I had the same problem. I really dunno if this is due to PH problem or lousy parentage.

but i still feel the difference is too great even without selective breeding. the quality should take few generations to reach such difference instead of just one, right? this is based on my experience with CRS which may be different?

Yes, I was letting them breed and was hoping the young one will darken but before they reached there, they berried again and than more came out....so it was kind of late for "birth control". Anyway they look nice collectively, forming an army of "RED ANTS" and wipe out any dead things that crossed their path. I think the skeleton of a dead fish is not spared too. Can't find my 9 missing tettras.

I buy from Y618, 5 pieces for a red note. It was ANG KONG KONG when I first bought. Now it looks so KUM KUM.

The food was recommended by Richard from colourful, he treat them to his shrimp too. So should be ok right?

So, I am right that you did not do selective breeding.

If you want them to be like Ang Kong Kong, then you will need selective breeding.
Only breed the best pair till it become more stable.

Fire Red like all Cherry is able to get berried at 2months old.
So, it is best to remove them after the 1st month to another tank.
Alternatively, you can have a small tank for your 2 pair of your best Fire Red to breed.
Just remember to remove the shrimplets after 1 month or else the same problem will stay.

Re: From Hero to Zero - losing the fire

hehe. So Fire red is the grading of Red Cherry Shrimp. I am thinking of add RCS into my comm tank with already some Malaya shrimp to add more colors to it since they can live in similar conditions as the Malaya.

So where do I go to get the cheapest RCS? I went NA and don't see any there.

which mean without selective breeding, these fire red shrimps grading will become worst off at a much faster rate than CRS does!
