    Hi all,

very new to this hobby as im more to marine.just got a green light from my boss to setup a 3ft low cost planted tank.not looking for anything fancy just normal eay care plants to begin with and fishes and shrimps maybe.everyone in the office will be coming out with a small sum of money and i will be topping up the rest.

maybe some of the guru's here will be able to advise me on things to get and a budget.

i will just need a bare tank-no cabinet as we have a place for the tank.

probably the budget is around $500.00.

    will this possible?

questions:will i need co2 tank for my tank as i was only thinking of keeping moss tied to the woods and maybe some carpet look alike plants for the base/ground.

    thanks.

don't really need. maybe just add a air pump for oxygen/co2 diffusion will do.

No need CO2 system if you choose easy plants. I have grown moss, red tiger lotus, Crypts, Blyxa japonica, Staurogyne sp., Lobelia cardinalis, Anubias, Hygrophila polysperma, Aponogeton rigidifolia and Crinum calamistratum successfully with just Seachem Excel and no CO2.

The disadvantage is that you need to dose the Excel 2 or 3 times a week, but you should be dosing about that many times anyway for other fertilisers.

You can refer to this website. www.littlegreencorner.com. There are some information and step by step guide for newcomers.

In my opinion $500 for new setup maybe a bit tight but it all depends on what you need and what are your expectation.

Actually CO2 and Seachem Excel they are almost the same, both provide source of carbon whether is liquid or gases stages. Adding Seachem Excel has a slightly better advantage as it has gluteraldehyde to kill algae but they are lighter in carbon, so it cant use it alone for high lighted tank. IMO

Re: help setting up a 3ft planted office tank

Ok, to avoid confusion about which is better: CO2 or Excel.

Both are sources of Carbon which is what the plants really need. (They produced their own O2 during photosynthesis.)

CO2 is good for all style of planted tanks. Not necessary for low light tanks, but will help.

Excel is an liquid source of Carbon. Good as a supplement to CO2 in high light tanks, but cannot replace CO2. In low light tanks, they are sufficient to help the plants along... same as mentioned about CO2 above.

Excel or CO2 better in a low light tank? Answer: One or the other is fine.

Personally, I prefer Excel (or other similar products) because it is more convenient in my opinion.

For Seachem Excel, you might need to take note is when you have more plant mass at later stage, you need to dose more but too much might affect the fauna if the plant takes in slowly especially slow taker plant like crypt etc. Seachem Excel is more suitable for light dosing but cannot replace CO2 itself. i think if you're considering co2, just get the cylinder and solenoid + timer. one off, set up, leave it and you're done. imo.
