its better to tie a thin but pack layer on the driftwood where you wants the moss to grow. if not, there maybe some "balding" patches.

that means the entire piece of DW must be tied with moss? the moss will not venture into bald places?

does moss have a top side and bottom side? either side can also be tied?
Not really have to put on the entire wood with moss, u can either put patches then let it grow and times passes, the wood will covered will moss..
what do you tie the moss down?
Depends on the type of moss/fissidens. Most will not spread far. Only perhaps Java/Taiwan moss and Singapore/X'mas moss will stick and creep along the branch[usually towards the light]other than spreading outwards. Spiky, Weeping, Flame all will not.
Notice only moss that stick to hardscape will spread.
US Fissidens will just puff up into a ball. The rest are too slow to expect it to creep all over.
You can if you dare to fail - Stan Chung
Depends on what kind of moss as well. Some moss grows very well on wood/dw but some just don't. One advice i can provide is not to tie it too tight to the wood, tie it lightly. Hope this helps. Oh yes i do agree with stan that xmas tends to creep nicely on wood and the effect normally turns out nicely.
Jus follow procedures it will be nice
