Yes, you may. Actually it depends on personal preference and limitations.

Personally, I find that for planted tanks longer then 2ft, 2ft is a good height. Any taller it becomes difficult to maintain (i.e. ability to reach most parts of the tanks with a tweezer while trying to view from the front). Adding a few inches to accomodate substrate is an option.

Don't forget that if you want to clean the glass, you'll need to be able to reach the back lower corner of the two sides with your hand (an algae scrapper can reach furthur but I find them awkward to use).
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

And deeper tanks means more light needed to reach the bottom.

I personally prefer the height and depth to have equal dimension. 2x2 ft is great but if it too big, 1.5ft is the minimum I would go.

I think a height of 2ft is good.

It is because plants look better in deeper tanks.

I feel the tanks deeper than 2ft will be be quite difficult to tend. For me 2ft high is already quite a handful when it comes to my weekly maintenance.

Another factor for tank deeper than 2ft would be the price. You'll be suprice how much more $$$ to pay for the additional inches.
    Cheers!!

How many will I expect to pay for a 4 x 2 x 2ft tank? No light hood.

the price depends on a number of factors such as thickness of glass, polished or unpolished edges, locally or overseas made, quality if workmanship and etc...
it would be better if you could visit some lfses of tank manufacturers to get an idea of te prices.

I think the kind of setup (plants) is another factor to choosing tank of different height.

Most swords plants, stem plants will look better in deeper tank. Lower plants like glosso will on the other hand, needs more intense light to reach the bottom. Without MH, you probably have to stick to 1.5ft for it.
