My 4ft tank has serious hairy algae previously, now they'd almost gone even on the edge of slow growing leaves.
I'd just done below for your reference, BTW, I'm not sure which one is the one...LOL...
1) Strong water flow, no dead cornor.
2) Increase CO2 from 1bps to 2bps
3) 6x39W T5HO, 2x11hrs, 2x6hrs, 2x4hrs, following the sunrise and sunset.
4) 30% water change weekly
5) Fertilize in small amount every two days.
6) SAE is hard working, but their ability is limited.
What kind of hair algae you having?
I was having the stagnant algae and i remove it manually by cutting out the infected part which is always infecting my glosso. Changed water every 6 day and load the tank with seachem potassium every 2 day. My tank is filled with hundred over CRS but CRS really does not like eating algae. I got green dotted algae on my glass and i remove it manually using the scraper. I also change my lighing from previously 5.5wpg to 4.16wpg
Peanut: balance everything!
Co2, light, fert.
Livestock that "get rid" of hair algae = Yamato. (but usually they will compete food with your crs rather than eating algae.)
Manually rid of algae 1st, then try your best to balance the 3 components, if it grows again, scrape off during the next water change and try balance again, till you know that it's balanced when algae of any sort in out of sight or grows very slowly.
Keep in mind that whenever there is light, be it sunlight from the window, or house light you turn on in the room, plant will react to it and start working, thus co2 must be readily available. Thus, if you only on co2 together with your lights when your tank is subjected to other form of light, the algae will likely to grow faster to compete for little co2 available in the tank water.

Have been seeing 'wavy' / 'hairy' green things on my tank wall along with green dots. Is that the start of hairy algae infestation?

Half correct. For a start and with CO2 and dosing, do WC around 1-3 times per week depending on how much you dose. If dose according to recommendation, once a week should be enough.Originally Posted by ivan8359
Once the tank matured, WC frequency can drop to once every 2-4 week. And again really depend on your plant mass and the dosing regime. Got to trial and error to find the correct WC frequency for every tank.
Without CO2 but dosing or stop dosing will be a different story...
