Hi bro. I think you'll be able to get all your info in another forum : reefcentral.com, under "DIY" forums n "Lighting" as well. They specifically cover Marine tanks and there are literally thousands of posts covering this topic.
Most of the threads here are on Freshwater aquariums, though I'm sure there a quite a few experts in the Marine area that may advice you.
From my limited knowledge (I just completed my LED build for FW scaping), you'll probably settle for 48-60 (upper end is 96) LEDs, with 50:50 of Cool whites n Royal Blues. The most common (recommended?) LEDs are 3W Cree XP-Gs n XP-Es resp. Your layout of corals/rocks etc and how you intend to hang the lights, optics, spacing bet LEDs, drive current etc are all considerations.
I am not into Marine tanks (yet?) but I don't think the 3W per gallon rule applies. In any case, once you're in LED territory, that guide goes out the window anyway! You'll find many helpful posts at RC with PAR readings that actually makes more sense. Those guys are really something!
Hope this little bit of into helps.
