    Hi all,

Probably this is not a very interesting killifish for most of you but I like them

I got two pairs of these fish a while ago and set them up in two separate tanks to breed. I of the pair did not spawn at all for weeks and then the male killed the female! Second pair was giving me a few eggs that were going bad. Because I am lazy I was water incubating them! Then I decided to put them on peat and managed to get the eggs to develop.

Around the same time I found a few fry in with the parents. After that I manage to hatch quite a few as well as finding the odd fry in with the parents!

    Photo of the adults:

End result of my breeding efforts is:

    Pretty happy with these fish!

Serkan, I can get pretty lazy as well but generally, didn't have much issues with incubating GAR eggs (IIRC, from N'sukka & Baissa). After collecting the spawning mops (with eggs), I briefly hang the mops to 'drip-dry', then bag it and store for 14 days in approx 28ºC. Longer incubation if your ambient temperature is 26ºC and lower.

When done with incubating and prior to filling the bag with water, I'd do a quick check with a magnifier (skip this if you have good eyes) for developed iris aka eyed-up eggs. Then fill water and give the bag a good shake, bartender-style!! Transfer mop and loose eggs to a hatch-out container (with enough water to fully submerge the mop) and leave it for a few days. Don't be surprised to see tiny wrigglers within the hour.

Scoop any fry you find with a deep spoon and transfer them to a shallow grow-out container (not a large tank since it's too much work for fry to find food). After a few days, do a 100% water change in the hatch-out container and shake the mop vigorously. Somehow the change of water and all that shaking promotes hatching.

For stubborn eggs, drip-dry the mop again. Store for another week then repeat the shaking again. Try it when you have 'expendable eggs' and update us how this method works for you.

JianYang, do you recall the link that hosted the Killifish Census you created and maintained? Perhaps now is a good time to re-up that census, even if it's way out-dated.
