Brooding Betta

Hi. I got a pair of mouthbrooding betta (dunno what spp & the lfs didn't do much help) which spawn today - manage to see the whole event. They are in a spp tank with 3 other fish. Question ... should I remove the brooding male or the others? When then?

Congrats on your spawn.
I only have experience with betta splendens. But I would suggest you remove the rest of the fish and leave the brooding male alone in the tank.

Reason being that it can't fend for itself and could be attacked by the rest. The rest will also eat the frys as they hatch. Don't cause stress to the male or it could just eat the eggs. So, carefully remove the rest of the fishes.

I guess you'll have to do it fast, I suspect the frys will hatch by 24-48 hrs after spawning.

As vican said, remove all the fishes except the male. however there should be a bubblenest and the male will blow the eggs under it. If not, the eggs will most likely will not survive. And if the male eats them, remove him as well.

Breed successfully and still have surviving 4mths old fries.[]

I have blackwater and methylene blue good for breeding bettas. Interested, let me know.

How 'bout fry food? Infosuria, BBS or commercial prep?

BBS Will be sufficient if u are not really into spending. feed them newly hatch BBS after 5 days or so wahen the fry are free swimming. Means they can swim and not dart about.

Forgot to read this thread..
But actually, buying daphnia to feed would be better because

1) daphnia are freshwater and they live longer in your fresh water tank
2) less hassle because you can buy them and just strain them with a brineshimp net/coffeesock and just add into the water.
3) the baby daphnia are just the right size as your fry's 1st food

You can buy daphnia at
1) Lam Hong (Ang Mo Kio)
2) Pasir Ris Fish farms (No. 35F, 63 should sell them). There are others, but you'd have to search at a couple of forums eg AQ and Arofanatics
