Finally... I got a 1ft x 1ft tank, complete with a filter with java moss and a fan to cool the tank.

I see baby shrimps that is born from my cherry shrimps, that's normal.

Now, I was thinking if I can 'decorate' the tank with a fish or two, and this is also to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in my tank. (Shrimps don't feast on larvae right?)

So, is there a fish type that can live with shrimps/ baby shrimps? The best that I know of is sucker fish.

Otos will do pretty well as tank mates if they survive the initial week or so. Other fishes no matter how small may feast on the shrimplets.... if your tank is well covered some shrimplets may survive...

Otos will not solve the mosqitoes problem but do agree they are good peaceful tankmates for you shrimps. I'm currently having livebearers and cherry/ sakura shrimps in my community tank and i can be sure that if there are enough hiding places, the shrimplets will survive.

So it seems like it's either the shrimps OR the fishes...

Looks like I have to manually skimp the water surface once a week to prevent any "foreign talents"

Usually that's the case. For Otos I've only seen 2 types, the regular ones and another type with stripe patterns... can't recall the name heheh.

If your water surface is agitated enough mosquitoes usually don't lay their eggs there. If I see any larvae in my shrimp tank I'll just dump them all into my fish tank and watch them go

So does an active filter disturb the laying of eggs by the mosquitoes?

The water is running right now.

Rasbora is a very good choice with shrimp, the fish is the same size with the shrimp, i don't think they will eat the shrimp-let.

    Re: Fish in shrimps tank?

OK bad news first. 2 shrimps are dead. One fire-red and one cherry

I have a filter in place, it's running 24 hours. I have a fan to cool the temperature, a moss for them, and I top up the water that evaporated everyday. The addition of water is about 20%.

The water is definitely overnight and I have already added anti-chlorine and I added minerals that are suitable for the shrimps.

So what happen? Right now I can see that another shrimp is darting around, which is no good...

How old is the tank and how do you aclimatize the shrimps when you introduced them in? Check your nitrate levels, shrimps are a bit more sensitive to that than fishes are. I usually age my water for a week for my shrimp tanks but overnite shld be fine.

    Re: Fish in shrimps tank?

OK I didn't age for that long but I do age the water for about 2 days+.

I've just cleaned the filter, hopefully that resolves the problem and it's just due to shrimps that are already ending their lives soon.

Just wanted to know what is the normal temperature for cherry shrimps? I have a fan that runs to cool the water from 10am to 2am.

I may be getting the solution to kill the metals and put in a temperature.

Temps around 28 is fine. My 1.5 feet with fan is around 26.5 - 28.5 or so in the day. Some water conditioners have additional heavy metal removal properties, especially copper. I'm using the JBJ one for my Shrimp tank. I don't change my water that often just 10% once per 2 weeks, I only top up daily from evaporation with a mix of conditioned tap water + distilled water. So far so good.

    Re: Fish in shrimps tank?

Wait a minute... I actually entertained the thought of having distilled water for my shrimps because my office water dispenser is serving me Pere Ocean Premium distilled water.

    Will that be useful?

    Re: Fish in shrimps tank?

Topping up with distilled water won't alter the water parameters much cos we are just returning the water lost through evaporation. For water change though using distilled water may have more effect on the water parameters so it's really up to the u. In my case one of the damn rocks is increasing the GH slightly so I try to soften the water more by using some distilled water. If no such problem exist in your tank conditioned tap water will do fine.

    Re: Fish in shrimps tank?

Any of the smaller tetras should be fine. i got Ember Tetras in my 1 footer with Cherry shrimps and they (shrimps) reproduce like mad...

But a month ago I added a dwarf puffer with the foreknowledge that "might" snack on the shrimps but I had a mad snail infestation which only a puffer can solve so I took the risk. Now I got a snail-free tank and a odd community of tetras, shrimps and a dwarf puffer. I observed that the shrimps are quite agile and though the puffer tried a few times to peck at them, they mostly got out of the way without harm. Now the puffer just ignore them mostly...and I have a fairly large and stable adult shrimps colony.

However...I noticed no shrimplets for a while now....hmm wonder if he has been snacking on those.
