    Hi all,

My tank is about 252litre, 180x36x39. I was using atman canister filter for afew years but recently it broke down and leaked.

I am now considering eheim. Have shortlisted 2026, 2226, 2073.
    My questions are:
Are these suitable for my tank?
What alternative brands do you recommend?

    Thank you all...

    Re: Advice on canister filter

what was the model of your previous filter?

Also, do you have a planted tank? bioload/livestock?

    Re: Advice on canister filter

My tank's a 6ft. But it's built into my wall, hence the dimension is longish and not very deep.

I can't recall my previous model except that it's an atman.

Yes, it's a planted tank, only crypts and the dreadful algae. As for bioload,
I have 50+ hasbora and 5 sterba cories.

I'm using an OHF at the moment, and circulation is very bad and i got algae
    issues right now.

I'm also contemplating tearing this tank down and making it a bare tank. But would like to change
Filter and see how it goes first.

    Regards.

IMO, such a length for your tank, just running 1 canister (2026) might not provide a good circulation throughout the tank.. There will be some blind spot or dead spot where water is not flowing well.. I feel that you can have 2 canister running simultaneously on both ends by a lily pipe output.. That will be nice.. Since you are doing planted, you can set 1 canister inline with a chiller & another canister inline with an 'inline atomizer'..

    Re: Advice on canister filter

I second alvinchan80's suggestion to have 2 canisters for circulation. Probably not the lily pipes if budget is a concern.
Another alternative is to have 1 canister and 1 power head for circulation. I have tried both setup

    setup 1
2 canisters, clean only 1 at any one time.
    pro:
    ensures good bacteria threshold.
lower in-tank profile. (not so many gadgets)
    con:
    higher initial cost
    higher out-of-tank space required

    setup 2
1 bigger canister, 1 power head for circulation.
    Pro:
    lower initial cost
    lower out-of -tank space required
    con:
    in-tank space required
may have higher long term running cost (power cost)

    hope it helps.

    Re: Advice on canister filter

Maybe you can consider 2 units of tetra 120 or even fluval fx5. Also, if budget and space permits, you may also want to consider converting it into a overflow with sump system?

    Re: Advice on canister filter

Well, budget is a constraint, so it space as the canister is sitting in my room space.

The option for 1 canister and 1 powerhead seems a likely option.

How abt canister with bigger flowrate? Will it help circulation?

How does fluval and tetra compares with eheim?

Where's a good place to source for filters? I've been to seaview and they have good selection.
    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Re: Advice on canister filter

    Hi

The Fluval FX5's power consumption is 48W while the eheim 2026 is only 20W. Perhaps the Fluval 405 is a better comparison at 22W and flowrate to the eheim model.

Any fluval users to advise on its performance?

    Re: Advice on canister filter

I did some search on this forum and seems like eheim's proII 2026 or 2028 has some issues with its impeller and leaking issues.
Need to hear from forummers here on this aspect. My previous atman filter leaked and caused major problem on my laminate floor, so i'm hoping with this investment, i wont face such issues.

The 2 choices i have now is between eheim's 2026/2028 (need to find out price for 202 and fluval's 405.

Possible issue with fluval is its hose. where can i find the hose if i needed more? Dont seem to see any spares in LFS.

    Re: Advice on canister filter

Leakage problem can be easily rectify. Place the canister filter in a container so that you can catch the leaking water should the canister filter started to leak. I was using the Samla container from Ikea for my 2026 & 2222 previously.

It's better to get more canister filter than getting a large one. A large canister will be very heavy and cumbersome to move from the tank to the toilet. Chances of the canister getting damaged while moving is higher due to the weight as a larger canister filter will contain more media and tank water. You might accidentally dropped it.

    Re: Advice on canister filter

So, how does the eheim pro (2226) compare with the eheim proII (2026) in terms of features, reliability and value for money?

And it seems like not alot of pple are using fluval filters??

    Re: Advice on canister filter

My experience on the difference between both canister filter is that the Pro II comes with a Primer to prime water into the canister filter. While it may help some, for me, I have skipped this part altogether. For my own experience, using the Eheim Installation Set was much better at adding water into the canister filter than having to prime the canister filter with the built in primer. Understandably, I possess a large frame which prevent me from ever going halfway into the tank cabinet, in which to prime the canister filter. With the use of the Eheim Installation Set, I can comfortably add water through the opening of the Installation Set and not to have to be in an uncomfortable body position just to start the water flowing into the canister filter.

Fluval filters do not have the widespread availability of spare part as compared to Eheim in Singapore.

    Re: Advice on canister filter

    Thanks for the advices.

I guess the lack of spare parts for fluval is making it more favorable for eheim.

Any LFS to recommend for hardware? Would like to make comparison...

You may want to take note that the spare part for Atman is very hard to find. I have a CF 1200, been trying month to find the replacement gasket.
