I saw some Gold Pencils and bought a trio of them. I wonder if anyone knows the scientific name for that? Couldn't find it through google

You can find anything on Google. Gold Pencilfish should be Nannostomus beckfordi.

if it swims at an angle, it should be nannostomus eques. If it has three lines, it should be nannostomus marginatus, the three-lined pencilfish. Both of these, and nannostomus beckfordi are normally sold at wuhu.

3-lined is Nannostomus trifasciatus. Dwarf pencilfish (which also has 3 lines but is shorter in body length + stockier in build) is N. marginatus

Another commonly available one locally is N. unifasciatus, the One-Lined pencilfish

Interesting how the thread has evolved on the pencilfish.. I don't recall seeing them though. Might have missed them out.

@icefire - Wu Hu is at 71 Seng Poh Road (very near to the Tiong Bahru market)

Hi, comparing the ones in my tank and the image searched via Google by the name 'Gold Pencil', I see some similarities. Wondering if anyone could provide me with the scientific name? Clearly, this group of pencilfish is very different from nannostomus marginatus, nannostomus beckfordi and the nannostomus eques since I do have them swimming in my tank too

I'm probably way off the mark...but they remind me of cyprinids and not pencilfish...probably some sort of rasbora?

Ya. It might not be pencils. There are only a few pencils that swim like a fish. The rest are just "head stander".. : )

It looks like some sort of danio. By the way, in your tank, nannostomus eques is on the right, nannostomus marginatus is on the left.

No need to wonder. If I wanted fishes to sell like hotcakes, I would have called them "Golden Nuggets"!!
