I got sulawesi direct from bro in Indonesia.. his advise (so far works) is :-
PH at 7.5-8
PPM at 250 and above (mine now maintain at 300++ to 400++)
Temp at 28-30
In additional, sulawesi snails also helps
Hi, im new to this forum and shrimp keeping. Actually... I attempted sulawesi before and failed miserably... With no knowlegde what so ever, i dive straight into sulawesi the moment i saw how amazingly gorgeous they are. I bought them, dump them straight into a new tank with freshly acquired tap water and some mosses... Of course... All perished within a couple of days.. Then i tried CRS, ok... Much better, a 1feet tank, ADA soil, mosses, temp 25-27... Alls well... Until i dump sulawesi shrimp in it... Sigh.. Sulawesi all died within a week... Then i finally realise, if im gonna do it, im gonna do it right. So, i custom made a 60L 2ft tank, coral sand as substrate, dragon rocks, mopani branch, ehiem pro 130 filter, lights... Just for sulawesi.. Just done with the tank yesterday, after hours of scrubbing the rocks, boiling the branch, more reading up... Now... All i must do is wait patiently for the tank to cycle, which i intend to cycle it for a month or however long it takes to make this right! Will tie in some mini nanas on
the branch once its cycled.. Im still at the learning stage, so if u have comments or suggestions, pls keep it coming.. We are all here to learn and experience this amazing advanture! Thanks!

nice tank all the best in your keepings
Hi shearerkk, pls pardon my ignorance... What is PPM? how do i measure that? I have two sulawesi orange rabbit snail in my crs tank waiting to be transferred when its ready. Thanks!!
your should be able to let your snails in 1st and let them help you build up your tank. And add shrimps later if you can acquire a very very green algea infested wood it would help you faster the progress of putting in shrimp.
Hi avex30, i heard that u have to cycle the tank first before u put any livestock in as the anmonia level is toxic to them, is that true?? Also i have a algae rock in my crs tank, the tank is quite heavily planted and heavily douse with ferts, so i m hesistant to tranfer anythin from it... Intially i tot of using the filter mediun from that tank, but that thought stopped me from doin that... Thanks!!
It's true if you are using soil like gex, ada, benibachi etc. But now you are using coral sands it will not have the ammonia but since u dose heavily fert than better not add in livestock until you do water change...... I should think post of your thing in tank should be inert maybe except the rocks. You can have some livestock to help assist the ammonia cycle to generate BB.
Hi, no... I dose ferts in my crs tank, not this new sulawesi tank so... I dun want to tranfer anything from the crs tank to this sul tank... This new sul tank, i put in tap water treated with antichlorine and chromine, plus i added in some bacterial solution (bacter max). Thats about it, nothing else. Running for 2days already, u think i shld put in the snails now??
Oh 2 days? Than leave it alone let it run for 1 week than do a 10% water change put the snails and than leave it. Just do 5% change weekly until you find that your tank is ready with the right parameter. Do add in slowly in patch of 10. Do not overload 1 shot your tank might not be able to take it.
Thanks for the info!! Will do that! But... How do i know the right water parameters? I know ph must be around 8, temperature 28+/- other than that... Im confuse with hardness, conductivity and ppm???? Are these important, Or shld i just leave them alone and not meddle wif it too much? Thanks!!!!
Ph 7.5-8 should do find temp 28 (althought some keeper here say they have it below and still survive) hardness = the GH factor i think maybe you can try getting it to reach GH 6 1st. Conductivity can only be measure with a TDS meter the reading various between keeper again.
Geezs... Getting more complicated! Haha... Okok, shld i start measuring gh now or after the cycling period? Shld i get a tds meter? And... Does it mean that once i have these parametrrs right, the tank is cycled? Or is there the nitrite nitrate to consider too? Sorry about the many questions... Thanks!!!!
Hi ecalyte... Sorry, might have exaggerated... I douse seachem excel everyday and musuro mineral powder every water change and co2 too. I know sulawesu needs very clean water, so i totally dont want to contaminate my sul tank with any thing from my crs tank... CRS are doing fine if thats ur concern :0)
1 week cycle - 20% wc add snails
2 week monitor any ammonia might be a very small i know snails does generate abit of waste if they manage to generate ammonia and can be read with test kit then you will need to wait for it to hit zero .
3 week if during 2 week there is ammonia trace than 3 week should be monitor nitrite.
4 week should be measuring the nitrate.
TDS meter is when you are already cycle you can use it to adjust your parameter of during cycling you can use it to test water also
No parameter right doesn't mean cycle. Cycling is consider done when there is no ammonia and nitrite and acceptable nitrate than that is consider cycle.
Thanks for the steps!!! Will follow deligently!! My two snails are juveniles, about size of a jelly bean dunno whether it matters... Anyway, will follow ur instructions! Eh.. When shld i add in the plants? Im gonna add in some mini nanas, not many plants can do well in warm alkaline water without ferts and co2... Any suggestions other the moss? Thank you!
it is not instruction just a guide i follow during my own cycling like i read before a expert said "Each tank you setup do have their own chemistry" So mean some tank setup you cycle faster and some take longer...... You can try putting some moss but sulawesi perfer more hiding rocks so maybe you can create hiding place with rocks or lave rocks. Someone correct me i read somewhere that when you have ph 7.5 above there are high chance of ammonia build up in tank so when you have lifestock just monitor once in awhile. Oh not too sure whether they will generate enough waste to help build bb maybe you can get some mature water from your crs tank. Just collecting it let it set to room temp. than add into your sulawesi tank might help to build up faster.
PPM :- This is a way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances. Just as per cent means out of a hundred, so parts per million or ppm means out of a million. Usually describes the concentration of something in water or soil.
I use a TDS Meter.
Ok will keep that in my mind, thanks alot!
