Depending on how thick the moss was when you first tied it, you can safely remove the string after 1-2 months. The moss should have established a good firm grip on the wood by then.
If you used cotton string (sewing thread) to tie, then no need to remove as the string will dissolve in a couple months. Only need to cut if you used fishing line.
