I have several Echinodorus in my tank, namely Bleheri, Rose, Ozelot... when I first bought them, they are short and leave are board... however as time pass, they grew taller and leaves too grew longer and leaf stem got longer too... How to get back the short stem, kept trimming but leaf alway touches water surface due to the extended stem!

    BEFORE

AFTER: how to reduce the stem length? Picture belong to loupgarou.

I usually just cut off the stem and it grows back just fine

    Yo bro!
You are in the same situation as I was before. There is no way. They are meant to be for big tanks. The reason why they stay small is because they were in a small pot when we bought them and the roots can't grow. So the plants stay small. Mine used to have new leaves everyday. Have to redo my tank because of that one stupid plant. Hahhaha! I am now staying clear of them.

I noticed that once an Echinodorus grows big, it's new leaf will grow to the same big size. So no matter how much you trim away the old leaves, it is no use. The plant remains big.

You can choose some Echinodorus that remain rather small or medium height compared to those big ones you mention. Search the plant databases in the FAQ section or try this search engine http://www.disky-design.dk/fish/Plan...antSearch.html

Me too had this problem, just gave away my huge Ozelot.

If it is the case of potting that makes the plant grow small,
then is it possible we just leave it in the pot and bury the whole pot in the gravel?

    E. Quad are known to remain short at around ~15cm tall.

Echinodorus plants by nature grow big esp. species like E. rose, E. 'Ozelot', E. cordifolius etc. etc. Keeping them small would be stunting them which most of us are trying to avoid doing do our plants or fishes.
    Cheers!!

EQ sometime do go crazy and can reach the surface of water...

I don't mind Ozelot, Rose growing big! Infact I want them to grow BIG! BUT Can't these plant just have shorter stem! The Stem 10 to 15 cm long leaving little room for the leaves to grow! Triming then will make them look like Porcupine!

Jug's Oriental seems to be OK, leaf is 10cm long but 3cm is stem... Sianzzz

Only the Echinodorus parviflorus 'tropica' produce only leaf with no extension stem.

I'll take pictures of my stunted oriental one day. it remains small. however it has almost next to no leaves tanks to perpetual trimming due to bba.

Jugg, your Oriental which you gave me is a twin! same as the E. Parvifloras I gave you... look like I got the better end of the deal! heheheh!

while pruning... I remove it from the gravel to be planted elsewhere and found that it is actually siamese twin... so I did a 3 sec ops to split them!
