Weird looking fella. It looks in excellent health. Are you feeding it with market prawn?

    Re: Check out my lungfish

Yes I fed it market prawns. other food on the menu are chicken liver, bloodworm and massivore.

Its a West African lung fish. I got this for $68 though at bout 8ins so $50 is quite cheap...

The lung did eat one of em but he left the rest alone. Guess he didnt like the taste HAHA. Actually I wanna to give them away..maybe will post later in the buy/sell section.

    Re: Check out my lungfish

I watched a Taiwan travel show on Channel U some weeks back. The host was in some African country and he had lungfish for his mid-day snack.

During the show, the African fisherman told him that the lungfish is a nasty biter. The actual crushing teeth is inside the throat I think, so if it catches hold of your finger, it can literally crush it off.

Yup that episode. They had several episodes dealing with freshwater fish. I think all the stingray fans would have caught the episode of him in Brazil catching rays in the wild along with Arapaima.

It tasted tender and nice, but had a mud taste too. Exotic meat for exotic tastebuds.

I don't think you can sex it just by looking at it. They don't seem to exhibit any outward difference between male and female lungfishes.

    Re: Check out my lungfish

I've never kept a lungfish before but research on the web shows that it feeds by sucking in a food item multiple times to grind it down before ingesting it. Much like a sugarcane machine. See this link to an image of the skull of the lungfish.

You can see that the teeth are mere stubs, but it is probably the sucking action and the constant grinding of the food item that can cause some serious hurt to the fishkeeper. Because when it bites, the whole head is working ON the biting power...

You feeling the slime? They are slippery buggers. I think your lungfish is probably quite tame by now.

    Re: Check out my lungfish

yea soft and slippery. I was expecting the skin to be rougher and harder. Maybe the bigger it gets the more aggressive it will be ?
It grows really fast though. i think about 5 inches in 2 months.

    Re: Check out my lungfish

Well, as long as it doesn't attempt to bite your fingers or kill the rainbowfish in the same tank, I think it's okay. How big is the tank anyway?
