Dominant male. I have 2 of them.

    One of my 3 females.

The end result of a spawning. They decided to spawn in the GEX soil instead of my breeding container..

Big thank you to Ronnie for bringing these in. I had the Itacarambi B7 population some time back but this Malhada is just as beautiful.

Beautiful ! I feel a sudden curiousity coming over me regarding the annual species...Can I blame you guys if the curiousity rises to dangerous levels (aka bidding for eggs) ?

I bear no responsibility if you go ga-ga over annuals..

If you want to try something similar, get Simp. fulminantis or Simp. carlettoi. These 2 are magnificent as well. Note, not all annuals are colourful though. Some people regard the drab species as being unworthy fish to breed.

Took a clearer pic of the dominant male, he moves too fast at times and I can't get a clear pic because I got shaky hands.

    They are already spawning.

Moving the dominant male and 2 females to a separate bare bottom tank for breeding. They are currently in an IQ5 and territory is at a premium in such a small tank.

I have bred over 100 species of Killiefish and am particularly fond of the Simpsonichthys specie but I have tried starting with S. magnificus eggs many times but none of my attempts have been successful. It is one of the most beautiful species in the genus.
I have had the best luck with S. constancieae and have some success breeding S. boitonei.
I moved to a desert area and now my tanks remain at high temperatures so I only have good results with Nothobranchius and Simpsonichthys species.
I can only work with Aphysosemion species about 8 months out of the year. This is frustrating but I hope to install a new air conditioner next spring and perhaps that will allow me to work with Killiefish with do best in the mid 70's*F/24*C.
Old fish breeder. SA Dwarf Cichlids, Hypancistrus sp L260, L333 and Peckoltia L134 breeder. Also Sturisoma, Dwarf Corydoras spp, wild Discus and Killiefish. Like breeding Characins and wild Betta spp too.

Simp. magnificus eggs seem to be sensitive during the incubation stage, where temperature and moisture levels in the peat are important indicators for their well-being. Not so much for Simp. constanciae, which can take a fair beating and still survive.

How are your fish doing Stormhawk ?

I finally jumped the annual train and got Simp. Costai eggs, l might be needing you guys' advice later on as Nem. Whitei is the only annual I've kept earlier (which was my first ever killie and a total disaster!)

    Hi there,

Maxima, just a casual comment from me. Simp. costai is a beautiful SAA. I think they are smaller than most SAA but should be fairly ok for someone like you who handles so many killies before. A Bulgarian annual breeder once email-ed me that he raised them on a diet exclusively on artemia nauplii & he got a good result with them. For now, I would be glad if I can get myself Austrofundulus leohoignei or better still, Callopanchax occidentalis/sidibei!

I have a soft spot for beautiful & nasty-looking fishes.

    regards,
    Shi Xuan

"Magnificus" could be the latin word for magnificent, because it is magnificent.
The name for it in my old copy of Baensch's Atlas though is cynolebias magnificus.

The name was changed a few years ago , but it`s the same fish . Not sure if there are any or many species left in the original cynolebias group .
The old cynolebias whitei is now neocynolebias whitei or has been mentioned a BROWN killie , spawn them in sunken mops and just pick off the eggs..

Re: Simpsonichthys magnificus Malhada NP 06-09

Wrong. Cynolebias whitei is now Nematolebias whitei, not Neocynolebias whitei. Neocynolebias does not exist as a genus name.

The current Cynolebias genus contains larger species like Cyn. altus, Cyn. gibbus among others, which exist in sympatry (same ponds) as some Simpsonichthys species. These larger species prey on the smaller Simpsonichthys.

The Baensch altas is long out-dated, given that most of these reshuffling of the ex-Cynolebias species was done only in recent years by Wilson J.E.M. Costa.

Sorry about the mistake fingers and brain not working together (senior moment)

Should know the latin name for whitei as I keep and breed them .

Costa did the revision can remember reading it when it came out a few years ago .

Now this weeks quiz is ... Latin name for NSC1 (south american annual)

Mine have hatched and are about 40 mm now .

In short, these guys are bulky beasties, like their "cousins" the ex-Megalebias species. My friend keeps these monsters as culling machines for his pets.

NSC1 is attributed to a "Pterolebias" species, now called Moema piriana. I never liked those to begin with, except maybe Moema quiii and definitely Pterolebias phasianus. Ended up with a whole lot of males once from a batch of eggs I got from a European breeder...
