What soil are you using? What about your filter? Looks interesting. Hope they breed for you. 8-)

Not a good idea to keep the rasbora in the tank with the Bettas if you intend to breed these coccina later on.

Males usually have longer fins, especially the pelvic and dorsal fins.

First can use the general rules for sexing all bettas eg ventral fins/anal fin lenght/dosal fin lenght/egg sac/body pattern/pattern of caudal fins/behaviour ect usual things for all betta species.

For coccinas the fine point to distinguish would depend on what strain. cause the sexing technique is slightly different for the 2 known strains..

    1) Indonesian coccinas (highly likely in the pics posted above): Both male and females can have green spot and both can also can have no significant green spot in centre (but still have green scales throughout body).
However, males more frequently have darker central green spots and females would usually have no spot/or faint green scales.

Summay: For indonesian coccinas color of spot can be used to sex 60 to 80% of fishes but have to be aided by general rules of sexing bettas cause there are some exceptions.

    2) Malaysian coccinas:

Females have no clear blue spot(whole body red or extremely faint spot), while males have the clear blue spot and mature specimens show the golden lining at the dorsals.

Summary: Color is fairly accurate for sexing malaysian specimens.

I would go for finnage, you can't go wrong with this.
On top of that, male will develop spade like extension on caudal whereby female would have rounded caudal.

    Re: my betta coccina pics

    umm..next test... water change..
perhaps i'll just top up water and clean the filter only...
but the ketapang leaves will surely rot in the next 2-3 weeks time...
like how many times you guys do water change on your wild betta tank?

    thank you..

    Re: my betta coccina pics

Don't clean the filter. You may end up destroying any beneficial bacteria in it when you wash it.

I always age water with a large ketapang leaf in the pail. It's usually light golden brown in colour, I age it for 3 days before I use it...always with a air bubble thing going to aerate the water. Under my rack, I try to be good and keep at least 4 pails going.

Usually, I will only change about 20-30 percent water once a week. No need to do it too often if you have a good filter going. Most of mine are in smaller tanks with just a sponge filter and air bubbles.

This depends on your bioload, I guess. If you have many fishes in your tank then maybe change a bit more water once a week. Don't overdo it.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: my betta coccina pics

Personally, I don't use filters in tanks housing any of the coccina complex members. They seem to prefer still water. So I try to keep bioload low, put in an apple snail to clean up uneaten matter and do weekly 20% water changes with aged water. This has worked out well for me so far.

For my channoides, however, I use spongefilters since they are mouthbrooders and don't mind the mild surface agitation.
    Cheers,

    Re: my betta coccina pics

I mostly have mouthbrooders. I have a pair of bellica in my 3ft planted community tank but I really don't want them to breed. That has a canister filter and two sponge filters and water flows pretty fast. They like it though. The male loves going to the rainbar and let the water coming out push him down...lol.
