    Hi all,

I got my FP gardneri eggs from GC 2 weeks ago. About 2nd or 3rd July.

They've incubated for 2 weeks now so I decided to hatch them today.

I can't see any eyed up eggs, in fact I couldn't find any eggs at all. So I dunked the whole pack of peat in.

I have wet the eggs at 4pm... Its 8pm now and there are still no signs of life...

    Any ideas?

Should I leave the water standing for another day and wait for them to hatch?

should I re-dry the peat again?

Theres supposed to be 20+ eggs, but none of them hatched..

Check again while the eggs are in the hatching tray. Use a toothpick or something small and sift through the peat. You ought to be able to spot at least a few eggs, even if they have some peat attached to it on the surface. However, do not be disappointed if you don't find any eggs in the peat. Sometimes, there's little you can do when eggs just die in the peat. Same with breeding any other fish.

    ok I just checked.

Zero fry, and I believe zero eggs. Maybe the eggs decomposed or something?

    I sifted through the peat.

So the best option now is throwing away the whole thing? re-drying the peat won't work right?

It's likely that they fungused in the peat during the duration of incubation. It happens at times, especially in our local climate. You can re-dry and bag up the peat again and try in a week's time. I guess if you don't get fry by then, then highly likely the peat no longer has any eggs.

goodness, that means I have been incubating a bunch of fungus for 2 weeks

I may or may not dry the peat tomorrow. Not sure if I'm just gonna throw away the whole thing.

    Still thinking

Had you checked the peat when they arrived ? Healthy eggs may have arrived but you may have cooked them by over-incubation. It happens often in summer; especially with fish that have short incubation. And that's exactly how it happens; they disintegrate in the heat. You are left with a portion of peat with nothing in it.

My advice; check the peat as soon as you get it so you roughly have an idea about the number. Then wet the peat right away. This will work well with non-annual fish as they will keep developing in water.

I made your mistake when I first started getting Cyanostictum eggs. They would arrive healthy but disintegrate during incubation because I simply waited too long. As you know, eggs develop much faster as the temperature goes up. I started getting %90-100 hatches when I changed my method and started wetting the peat as soon as I received it.

By the way, do wait for 3 days when you wet it. Some of them need time. You can also siphon/pour in fresh water, this will trigger some of the stubborn ones.
