I think that amount is quite normal if you are talking a brand new 4x2x2ft custom setup with cabinet + lights + filter + CO2 set and all that stuff that comes along.. Of course if one has the time and patient, one can always wait for 2nd product which is often quite value-for-money.

If you are really into it, the money will not stop there.. haha.. someone on APD once mentioned that when you are down that 'slippery slope' (of this-also-wanne-&-that-also-must-get & don't-you-think-this-will-make-my-plants-grow-better), you will find alot of your fellow planted-tank-buddies all shaking hands with each others..

    So see you there.[]

I think I managed to keep my 6ft tank setup under $2K. And that's only because I got a fantastic deal (less then $1K) on a second-hand tank, cabinet, lights, and filter. Saved on base fert by using aquatic compost (about $30). The RTG arowana was a birthday present from wifey. Plants from Teo's, so significant savings there.

Do you include the price of fish in your setup?
    Tank is 4x2x2...
Mine without fish is around $1.2K....to date.
Guess most of the money goes into my arowana stomach.......
He ate all of my SAEs!!!!!!

Lets see, the first one a 55 gallon i would say around 1.3k. The 2nd one a 30 gallon, about $50. And the 3rd and most recent tank, 209.49.

The funny thing is my favorite one is my $50 dollar tank. For some reason my hugely expensive tank just doesnt get the growth that my cheap one does. Theres somethign missing but i dont know what it is.

Cost? Money? Can't tell cos lost count already......

Seriously, my 4X2X2 was calculated to cost about $2.4K which I think it's quite minimal considering the setup includes a cabinet stand, a 0.5hp chiller, 2X150W MH, Eheim 2028 and a 5L solenoid CO2 set. This of course does not include fish or plants.

    tank - $150
    concrete stand - $150
    atman 3338 - $100
    6 x 36w PL - $200 and counting
    Co2 with solenoid - $150
    Timers - $30
    Fan - $30
    Gravel - $80
Ferts - $20, rest are complimentary
Plants - $20, rest are complimentary
Fishes - $10, still very low in bioload
Liquid ferts - $25 so far (flourish and other chemical compounds)

Now to start calculating, the amount spent is astronomical. Now I know why people say that I am slave to my hobby

i think 1-2k not including the tank is quite common for (4ft and above) also, your budget will determine what you have in the setup. I blow 1k in dennerle base fert and gravel for my 4x1.5x1.5

Can ask how many packs of ADA soil and JBL base fertilizer you use for your 4ft tank? And also how thick is the total substrate?

People has the misconception that the marine tank is the only aquarium that is expensive. Nobody knows that the planted tank is equally pricey.

With the amount dumped into the planted tank, I could get a decent marine setup working
