    Hi all

I just had a bad experience recently. I just started to use sump tank not long ago. Few days back, I was catching my fishes into the prawn bag, so I was draining the water from my tank. I did not off the sump tank pump and the water level become very low. It start to suck the dirty water from the compartment and it release into the tank. My tank become very dirty and I have to top up my sump tank water again. Please remember to off your sump tank pump before draining water from your tank.

    Thanks and regards
    Koolman

To avoid detritus in the sump, put a small power head into the sump for circulation and set it on timer to let it run for 2 hours(longer if you got a big sump) everyday. This will ensure everything gets circulated into the filter pad.
I have a small power head and air stone bubbling(to avoid surface film build up in sump) in the sump set to run every night for 2 hours and my sump tank is as clean as the main tank. You can let it run 24/7 but not necessary.

    Hi,
Do you have any picture to show your setup. Very keen to do it but lack experience.

    Thanks

    Here is mine.

The 1st on the left is for CO2. 2nd timer on the right is on for 2 hrs after mid-night to run the air pump and small power head in the sump.

The power head together with the air stone is on the left back

A duck mouth nozzle is used to direct the flow to dead spot

When I do WC, I will shut off the valve on the return and power off the pump. I don't like the return sucking water down from the main tank as I have frogbits and they will get sucked down also. When done, it is the reverse, power on the pump and open the valve.

I actually can don't use air stone to break the water surface but attach the venturi connector and let the power head do the bubbling. Using it since I have an air pump unused. Just my humble set up for a 3 feet planted.

You can, just trial and error. There are a lot of sump set up examples on Youtube. Search for DIY wet dry sump. FW and SW sump works the same.
