Cool. I still thought im the only one who are more impatient. Only cycle my IQ5 for 2 days added plants and then the shrimps. So far been 3 weeks all are plants and shrimps are doing great...
Ok... finally went to buy some plants for my shrimps. Bought some hardier plants and see how they fare without CO2.
Shrimps seems happy as they are attacking the wood behind the mossAlso, saw some SS shrimps and bought 3!
Didn't cycle the tank like others.... too impatient
Only cycle for a day before adding shrimp. 1 week later.... now plants added. I know... I got the process reversed! hahahaha

Ok, you two have totally mess me up. First, i wanted an IQ tank, may it be 3 or 5 for plants and shrimps, but i was advised against it by the seaview guy. He said LED is no good for plants. Then now i see Yany has CRS without CO2 and chiller but i was also told, CRS must be below 25 degress blah blah...
I have setup my tank, it has been 2 days, added new plants today but still not gutsy to put shrimps in.
Any idea why we have to cycle tank before introduction of live stock?
Every tank has it's own chemistry the normal cycling time is around 4-6 weeks.. Do not follow what i did as it is a negative example for starters. I bought harder shrimps Sakura/Cherry in my IQ5 to cycle my tank...

Hi Chris. how many shrimps do i need to cycle my tank? based on a 18L tank.
A few pieces will do as you just needed it to cycle the tank. What shrimps do you intend to keep kermit ?

Hi chris, I actually like the Crystal Reds but I was told they are not as hardy as the cherry shrimps.

There's a bunch of variations to the cherries. Yellow, snowball, fire red, rili, choco, green. All these shrimp are relatively hardy if you wanna try. Of course put a few commando shrimp in before commiting your whole stock. Crs is possible if you put your iq5 in an air conditioned room and after its been cycled properly. I don't see a problem unless your water becomes unstable.

So where can I get some commando shrimps? Are they really called that?
Will introducing shrimps now help my plants or will it make it worst? My moss and my algae ball seems to be turning brown.
Sorry to confuse you. I meant commando shrimp as in cheap/cull shrimp put in first to test the water in the tank. The so called "guinea pigs". I don't think putting shrimps in there would help your plants much. If your plants are turning brown, its probably because something is off in the water for your plants. Maybe lack of light or lack of nutrients. It won't make it worse though cause shrimp don't eat the plants, only stuff that grows on it.
Oh haha, ok. I've a PL light (11w) on for 8 hours daily. But the rest of my plants seems ok, except for moss and algae.
Sorry to hear about your plants Kermit. Did you add anything else besides CO2 tablets?
The plants and moss I got is still thriving. I can even see some new growth.... and I'm using the LED light that is provided with the IQ3. I switch it on in the evening for about 5 hours... and sometimes, in the day when its cloudy and dark. I do not add anything else..... so hopefully, it will still be fine down the road.

Is there such thing as CO2 over dose? Coz I put one in everyday. But ytd did not put coz the previous day one still not fully dissolve.

I have not changed any water, just topping up with tap water due to evaporation. Feed them a little daily and saw a few moulted shells. I have been reading about temperatures and hopefully, these CRS are conditioned to higher temperature. I don't know what will happen to them in the long run (maybe no babies?) but will keep monitoring

Since you have cycled your tank longer than I did when I started, why not introduce a couple of ghost shrimp first to test water? Also, try to get moss balls as the shrimp do love them and they help to clean the water as well.
You can try getting some shrimps from c328 the aunty shop to test your water, theres a rack where the bettas are kept. got some low grades shrimps there. Or polyart the shrimps are outside along the corridor.
