Does a larger tank requires more time to cycle?
Let assume the medias and substrate used are the same and both running on external cannister, the only difference is the size of the tank. A 2 feet as compare to a 4 feet tank.
Please feel free to give your comments.
    Thank you.

    Re: Tank cycling

I believe if you used the correct cannister with flowrate that is able to support your tank efficiently then my guess is as good as that both cycling time will be the same. Presume that you tank is under filtered then definately you would need a slightly longer time for the bacterial colony to slowly build up and then these beneficial bacterial will slowly eat up all the unwanted substance such as ammonia, nitrate and nitrites. However, recommendation is usually to overfilter than underfilter your tank. Please correct me if I am wrong. =)

    Re: Tank cycling

Is there a calculation for the cycle time. For different flow rate or do i need to open the cannister to see.

    Thanks

It should be the same, however you can speed up the process by adding liquid baterial during the initial setup.

Bigger than means you will need to add more new soil and the soil need to be conditioned/cycled. Since existing soil and media is used, all that is needed to do a few large WC for the first 3 days to clean the new soil and let it run for 1 week before introducing shrimps. Even if not adding new soil also need to do the same as you will disturb the soil when transfering it over.
There is no magic number for time taken to cycle, but you need to do the water test for ammonia as the new soil like ADA one contains ammonia and the BB needs to build up to handle the additional ammonia from the new soil. One thing for sure is the time taken to cycle the tank will definitely be faster than a brand new tank.
Things to take note when you move the filter is the filter cannot be off for more than 30 mins or the BB will start to die off.

    Re: Tank cycling

Thanks for the advise, as i know need to change water but not sure why.

By the way is the dripping system used for salt water fish better or just the weekly 25% water change better. is there another way to maintain the water condition.

    thanks

Why change water is because by doing so, you are trying to remove the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate manually, which in turn will speed up your cycling process.

If you want your tank to be more stable in the long run,(especially if you are keeping sensitive livestock) cycle your tank WITHOUT changing water for a month. Do large water change before introducing the livestock.
