Most of our shrimp tanks managed to achieve 0ppm for Ammonia and NO2. However, it seems that it is quite impossible to get the NO3 to achieve 0ppm.

The standard Nitrate maintenance is via weekly WC and having plants like frogbits.

There are products available like the Benibachi Nitrate Remover to reduce Nitrate safely for shrimps (as indicated in the product description).

Anyone try this or similar product? Care to share your experience?

    Happy Shrimping..

I have always wondered the same thing. Anyone actually bought the Nitrate Remover from BeniBachi..?

From what I have been reading thus far, it seems like nitrate removers work by chemically reacting with nitrates to break it down / change it into something non-toxic for shrimps and other wildlife. However, this in turn produces another compound in the water column and will contribute to your tank's overall TDS. Afterall, you can't really expect the nitrates to disappear. Hence, even when using nitrate removers, you will still have to maintain your water quality by doing regular water changes.

I agree too, its better to do weekly water change rather than depended on chemical to chemically react with nitrate. it will contribute to the rise of TDS too.

I agree with eviltrain. Frogbits and hortworts are able to suck almost all the nitrate and phosphate out of my tank. I even have to fertilize with abit of nitrate (NPK) once in awhile when I notice the frogbits starting to have poor growth.

As long as nitrate stays around 10-20ppm, the shrimps should be fine.

    Hi all,

Have used that product quite some time back cause of high nitrate. Not much significant decrease in level as only dose once. But one thing for sure is its harmless to CRS. No deaths after adding that.

Had bad experience using such products in the past. Actually if I am not wrong they do not break down the harmful substance into nothing and you can forget about it. It is more of it turning the harmful substance into something not harmful and it somehow still stays in your tank until it slowly disappear. Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Bro Curry try not to use it unless it really such a urgency that after changing water you still having high No3 i've it can say it is okie but like the rest of the bros using chemical is not the rest solution. It will cause some unknown issue due to other stuff reaction to it and not the production induce the problem but indirectly. So get frogbits, water letture etc to throw in our one regretting pesty plant but did a great job. DUCKWEED it a pest to have it but it does the trick very well. How to expect low light in your tank cause it will cover the whole surface. I try reduce my tank No3 to almost near 0 within 2 weeks but there is barely any light passing thru into the tank cause surface all cover by them.

Haha.... tks for all your inputs.

Drop the idea now about using nitrate remover n put in a lot of hornworts (2 x $1 bunch). Managed to hold e nitrate level to 10 - 15 ppm......

    So far so good....

    Happy shrimping

Guys, don't need to worry about nitrate. does it really affect shrimps colors? I mean I don't know. just enlighten me. reason nitrate is an integral component for plant growth.

Have you measured what is the nitrate level in your tank? Don't do/add unnecessary things if your tank has no problem.
It's better to remove using the natural way, importantly you must have more media to cultivate bacteria to help breakdown all this harmful substance and add more plants that remove nitrate more efficient.

Re: Any user experience for Benibachi Nitrate Remover or similar ?

Yes, I do regularly measure e nitrate level in my tank (at least once or twice per week). It is hovering around 20 ppm and to prevent it from rising further, I put in a fair amount of hornworts n regular WC (20% per week). After doing so, managed to bring it down to abt 15 ppm only....

That is why I am lookin at something safe for e shrimp n yet able to bring e nitrate level to 0 ppm....

After taking all the inputs from e shifus here, will stick to WC n plants.....

    Happy Shrimping.

15ppm and 20ppm is very little far between. unless you are using an extremely sensitive test kit, i don't think it will really help. You may test the test kit whether it is accurate. a test kit that can differentiate 5ppm of accuracy can be hundred of dollars used by commercial such as Hyflux.
