My Resun CL-280 fan will start spinning immediately after switching on. I suspect something is wrong as I smell a weird smell prior to this happening.

What happened was the chiller's compressor kicked in for a prolonged period (~30min?) and after that the weird smell came and I switch it off immediately. After waiting for a few hours for things to cool, I switch it back on and the fan starts immediately (I think the compressor kicks in too).

My observation previously was that the chiller's fan will kick in after 1 or 2 min after switching on and not immediately.

Does anyone have any idea what is the problem?

Definitely not working right. There is a 3 minutes delay for circuit protection on power on. Advise that you stop using it and get it serviced. With smell it sounds like electronic failure especially without the 3 minutes delay on power on.
Don't play play, might cause a fire.

Ah I found out what happened to my chiller:

Apparently the relay was burnt in the control module...causing the compressor to be constantly on. Kind of weird...

since you already open it, just get new relay and replace it. Make sure the replacement relay have better spec though.

125 VAC sounds like not the right relay used, maybe the chiller got step down already. For the Amp a 10A will be sufficient as this chiller draws about 0.8A. So the correct relay should be something like a 10-15A 240 VAC.
Is your chiller kick in very often? Relay will wear off faster if chiller kick in is very often. Maybe share the tank volume you use the chiller on?

Re: Resun Chiller kicks in immediately after switching on

My tank is a 1.5Ft (about 40-50L), recently bought this chiller 2nd hand. It kicked in for about 30mins continuously (I just hook it up to my tank) before the relay burnt out. I had tested the unit for 2 hours previously where it kicks in for about 5min for every 15-20min (used for a pail of water about 10L to test it with my pump).

The controller unit's soldering doesn't look like it has been desoldered before, so I think this is the original relay? Does anyone has a picture of the control unit of the CL-280 to share? To verify the relay is the original.

Relay should be original. it should be QC issue. Just replace the relay with the correct voltage will do. Simlim tower will be the place if you are unaware. Bring along the spoiled one and ask for a higher rating one.

Great to hear that its fixed. So did you get the same VAC or higher specs?

I got a higher spec version. The original one in the Resun seems to be a low spec one.

When I couldn't find an equivalent relay that has similar rating at SLT, I asked one of the guys there about how to read the ratings then only I realize the original relay has a really low rating.

And I realize the temperature control unit is a very simple circuit...

Yup, the chiller technology is just like those old window casement air con. Only difference is one is using analog thermostat while the chiller is using digital.
