I think depend on the owner. If the owner of the marine tank is knowledgeable and knows what they want out of their marine tank, they would create one that will last or until the tank give way.[:] I don't believe a marine tank would only last ard 8 month.

A marine tank is a highly complex ecosystem. This because the ocean is a much more stable environment than rivers or ponds, therefore to recreate this environment is near impossible. However, some parts of the ocean is subjected to great fluctuations, such as the river mouths, and shallow coastal seas. Organisms from these environment have a greater capacity to adjust to the changes to the environment and are thus, more 'hardy' in a sense. As a result, most environmentally responsible aquarium shops sells only a few species of fishes and other orgainsms. The good news is that more knowledge and equipment will become available to maintain a sustainable marine aquarium.

My suggestion is to avoid reef type of aquarium unless you have the means (time more important than money) to support the system. One good guide is to look at the tanks created by Aqua-technique. I feel that they are responsible enough to use only 'hardy' species.
