    Haven't you seen those bare bottom tanks at the LFS? That means its not a must to have "something" at bottom of your tank.

    I suppose it depends on what you are trying to do with the tank. Since you're posting in planted tanks section, I imagine you'd want a planted tank. With planted tank, for most plants with roots, you'll need substrate; gravel, peat, sand or something that the plant roots can hold on to. Unless you're just planning to have a floating plants or loose plants like java moss. Or alternatively, you don't need substrate, but you can have tank purely with plants that grow on driftwood (i.e: anubias), or those that can be tied to driftwood (i.e: Riccia)
